View Full Version : Women at eL games

this has probably been discussed before, but i'm just pondering the issue at the moment...
when i first started going to EL games (about 15 years ago, when i was 8 or 9) i would often have been the only female at the match. that obviously isn't the way now, the proportion has increased greatly, but women are still a significant minority. I'd say at Bray it's maybe 10-15%, increased by the teenage girls who only come to hang around and look at the youngfellas.
What's the situation like at other EL clubs? And are there many women on the club or supporters' club committees?
Do ye think attendances at matches could be improved by making the league more attractive to women? Or continuing the idea of promoting it as a family game?
Or would it not make any difference, are women just not interested in watching EL soccer?
(started thinking about this after reading the GAA thread, my experince always having been that there is a much larger proportion of women/girls at GAA matches than soccer, presumably because it is more family orientated/community based etc)

I have noticed that there are more women staring to go to EL games. I have gotten my other half to go to matches recently and now she loves the buzz. Which goes to show that footie games don't have to be a man's thing. Bring the other half along and make it an enjoyabke event for all.

Sad, very sad :p
A good few women go to the Drogs matches alright, and they're a great addition - great seeing them get into the buzz on their own backs!!
However, blokes that bring their other halves to matches are pretty sad imo -ye just don't do it!!
Pats have always a huge amount of young girls supporting us. Not sure why. Personally prefer that Miss Dodge has no interest in football (bar Freddie Ljungberg and Thierry Henry apparently)

Quite a few at Rovers, mostly teenagers who go with their dads, and some of them are not bad looking either (the girls that is, not their dads;) ) Could do with a few more of them though.

My gf hates the eL, though she plays for Stella Maris and loves football and was part of Noel Kings barmy army for a brief spell. She is a premiershít fan............

I started going to Mons games when I moved back to Monaghan and wanted to get my sons into going to games and since their dad was many miles away I took them. Had always had an interest in the Mons and went to the odd game when they played in Dublin when I was a student. Grew up in a football house so altho in my early years I rebelled against footie to wind my brother up so we could fight and he would get told off for annoying his little sis, I grew into it. Liverpool, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and then the Mons.
Soon I got addicted to the live football buzz and even when my kids were away with their dad for the weekend I would go to the Mons games on my own sometimes or rope a mate in. After about 2 seasons going full time to the games I decided to hold my sons 9th birthday party there and had 12 boys under the age of 10 at the match and for food in the clubhouse after. One of the committee members who I had been talking to a few times talked me into being on the Silver Jubilee Committee as he reckoned anyone who could control 12 hyper kids could take on anything! I have been working with the club a few years now and have brought more of my friends along and they have become fans....my 14 yr old sister is now coming to games with some of her mates too. I pushed for the last few years for a womens team and now they are up and running and 2 of the girls from the team are now on the committee making our female count on the Management Committee 5 out of the 15....not a bad ratio!
It is great to see more and more females getting involved in clubs and going to matches....the future is pink my friends!

Just focus your vision on her for a few minutes next time you're in the Showgrounds.
It'll achieve the same net effect, without the need for any caustic substances.....
Even if im drunk looking at her is punishment enough :D

Beer goggles and all that, you may not know what might end up happening  :D :p
Quite alot of female supporters attend town games and there would be alot involved in helping out within the club and I know of a few who are involved in the running of the supporters club

Ha ha.....my dad told me when I started going out with blokes to keep one steady (Mons) and have a few others on the go for occasional flings (NI, Rep, Pool!) so have applied that principle to footie too! :D

I know it is only a wise-crack, but under what criteria could you qualify Shamrock Rovers as "the best"?
I'd imagine that going by the title of this thread he means the best women - something I would have to concur with.

this is just great.
every mention of women and football automatically turns into a fcukin beauty contest.oh she's too ugly to be here. all rovers girl fans are class lookin.
either they are there to look at fellas legs, or there because their boyfriends bring them, or there to pick up men accordinhg to this thread
grow up lads
womens football is the fastest growing sport in the world
and yes they do add to attendences obviously
good quality football will attract more women
less hormone fuelled sexist chanting will attract more women
better facilities will attract more women
the implication that women want tighter shorts or breastfeeding facilities for the family conscious
is frankly a load of me hole lads

But alot of women do go to the games just for the men be it the players or the lads in the stand. It's just natural - kids (girls :D ) these days........

There are quite a few female supporters in Turners Cross. A lot of them are genuine and a lot of them are their to get off with youngfellas. I'd say the latter outnumber the former, just.
But alot of women do go to the games just for the men be it the players or the lads in the stand. It's just natural - kids (girls :D ) these days........
True unfortunately....they give us all a bad name(ive actually been a girl the whole time iv been on here RR ;) )
Honestly though if 20 girls come to meet fellas and one gets hooked its worth it. Club gets their money and a supporter for life. Not everyone that comes to an EL game is gonna love it and keep coming back- so by getting the most people possible to come(for whatever reasons) you've more chance that at least some of them will get hooked

I know I'm probably in a minority but I always like to see northern ireland doing well.

You better be talkin about me! :D
There are a good few girls that go to tolka frequently and who are actually there to watch the team play rather than look at the fellas in the stands.
I've been goin to tolka since I was about 3 and rarely miss a game. I think its more important to promote the league in general rather than to aim it towards one or other sex. The younger you can get the kids into it the better but it does mean makin the grounds a more family orientated place. ie proper toilet facilities covered stands for both home and away supporters etc etc.
for example, how many of you would bring your small children out to a place where they will stand in the cold, often wet grounds, have to pee against a wall and queue for half an hour for chips?
And even if you did, would your kids be enthusiastic to go back again the following week?
I know some of you will say your kids love everything about the EL and if I tell the truth, most Shels fans will have seen me with my 2year old at the odd match, but i just think a lot more parents would bring there kids if the facilities improved.
And if that keeps one or two more celtic jerseys off the streets sure isn't it worth it!! :)

Well said Babydol....that is one thing that we try to promote at Mons...its a family environment with a comfortable club house where the kids are safe and there are ample toilet facilities. The one stand we have is more than sufficient for the "crowds" and kids seem to love the Mondogs! I agree that the younger you get them into the feel for going to matches the better and they are more likely to keep coming to games.

I have always tended to notice that at Bray in particular. Also, I recall reading an interview with a fairly cute looking Bray fan in The Tribune magazine last year - I don't suppose you know her?;)

Whats the big deal anyway over women going to the matches, regardless of whether theyare there to watch the match or the 'yung fellahs'. It improves the atmosphere at the match and it showa that women are no longer imtimidated to go to footie matches. As I said in my earlier post, my other half now loves going to the matches and is really getting into it now. Is ab;le to talk (sense) about the games, and is more that capable of holding her own in a conversation of football. It is just those narrow minded people who believe that women have no part to play in football. B*llsh*t. Those who think that should just grow up, live in the real world and enjoy the game for what it is. That is what it is there for.

Seriously i think youre taking things a bit too seriously. Im sure everyone on here is happier women go to games, any fan is gooe. Some of the lads may be trying to wind up but i dont think anyone seriously said women have no part to play.
The annoying teenage boys are just as bad as the annoying teenage girls but they all pay money so welcome
