Ewan Fenton who managed Limerick on a few different occasions.

He played on the Blackpool team in the famous Matthews Final of 1953. He moved to Limerick in 1960 and managed us on a few different occasions developing countless players and also ran a very successful motoring school in the city. He taught me to drive and countless others.

He also managed Linfield in the Irish League from 1967-1970.

He'll be sadly missed.

That's very sad gspain - had the pleasure of meeting the man a few times back in the 60s when Limerick played in the Market's Field. The time of Joe O'Mahoney, Al Finucane, Andy McEvoy and the then secretary, the late Jack Tuohy who lived in Dooradoyle.:(

The late Ewan Fenton who passed away yesterday

LIMERICK FC soccer star and cup winning manager Ewan Fenton, has died. The man who famously took part in what is now referred to as the Matthews FA Cup Final of 1953 and led Limerick FC to cup glory passed away peacefully yesterday.

Originally from Dundee, Mr Fenton came to Limerick in the summer of 1960 to follow his soccer ambitions with Limerick FC where he worked as player/ manager.

He spent seven eventful years with Limerick FC, in which the team lost out in two successive cup finals to Shamrock Rovers, before heading to Northern Ireland to manage Linfield. He won the League Cup with Linfield in 1970 and brought the trophy back to Limerick the following season in 1971 on his return as manager.

Former Limerick FC and Irish international goalkeeper, Kevin Fitzpatrick, said that Mr Fenton was "like a father" to all the players he coached and would be sadly missed, not only in Limerick soccer circles, but by everyone across the city.

"For all us young people who were about 18 or 19 in the 1960s, he was like a father figure. He brought us all on so much. He was the best coach we ever had, the best manager," Mr Fitzpatrick said.

"He was so in love with Limerick that it was unbelievable. His death is a huge loss for everyone. He was like a father to us all," he added.

Mr Fenton played in the famous FA Cup Final of 1953 when Stanley Matthews brought Blackpool from 3-1 down against Bolton Wanderers to a 4-3 win in what has become known as the Matthews Final. Mr Fenton played at right back on the day which has gone down as the most famous final in FA Cup history.

He also started the city's first driving school, the Cecil Street-based Ewan Fenton School of Motoring, in 1965. Mr Fenton retired from his work as driving instructor last year after 40 successful years of helping Limerick motorists pass their driving tests.

Mr Fenton is survived by his wife Vera, son Ewan, grandchildren, relatives and friends.

His removal will take place from Thompson's Funeral Home to St Mary's Cathedral on Wednesday night at 7.30pm. Funeral service will take place on Thursday at 11.30am followed by cremation service at Mount Jerome.
