1988 Friendly. Saudi Arabia 1-1 England

1991 European Cup Final. Marseille 0-0 Red Star Belgrade

1992 EC. Sweden 1-1 France

1993 European Cup Final. Marseille 1-0 AC Milan

1994 WC. Rep Ireland 0-0 Norway

1995 ECQ. Liechtenstein 0-0 Rep Ireland

1996 FA Cup Final. M*******er United 1-0 Liverpool

1997 WCQ. Macedonia 3-2 Rep Ireland

1998 WC. Spain 0-0 Paraguay

Worst game ever seen :
Shown on RTE on a Saturday afternoon , deferred coverage.

I think the sh!te games that come into my mind are the ones where it was built up to be classic only to be a major let-down and there's a few of them that spring to mind,

Brazil v Italy 1994 WC Final,

Liverpool v Man Utd F.A. Cup Final 1996

Bayern Munich v Valencia 2001 CL Final

second the World Cup 94 final, and the Utd - Liverpool FA CUp final, but I think the worst gamew I've ever watched would be a circa 1998 Arsenal - Sheff Wed game that was shown on Sky one wekday night. It ended 0-0 and as far as I can remember a tame Bergkamp shot that rolled about 5mph into Pressman's gloves was the only shot on traget that night.

Also the Arsenal-Utd game this season was pretty uneventful, and every Chelsaea game I've watched this season as well

Back in 1975 (I think) RTE were thinking of showing English league games as part of their newish Saturday afternoon sports show.
They showed West Ham United v Derby County - two good footballing sides at the time but it was truly awful and ended 0-0. Even as an Irons - a club reknowned for attractive footie - fan, I have to admit it was shocking.
RTE quietly dropped the idea for a few years after that.

The more important, the more boring naturally.

Juventus 0-0 AC Milan, 03.
Romania 0-0 Ireland
Ireland 0-0 Norway
Liverpool v. Chelsea (any game)
Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United, league 2005

to name but a few - not that many Rovers games I can remember (or want to remember) though..

Remember it well - enjoyed it. DOn't see the Owls that often on TV.

Worst game I remember:

Ireland 0 Iceland 0, with our best player Keane (not Robbie) playing centre-half. Not sure we mustered 1 decent shot on goal the whole game.

How anyone can list Malta 0 Ireland 2 as one of the worst games of all time is beyond me - our first ever qualification for the WC and we score 2 away from home  . I was at it as well. Fantastic game - maybe because the viewer was watching it from a barstool someplace and the transmission from Malta was cr+p.

That was the one I was going to go for - truly awful, was that about 1995?

Ireland v Egypt in the World Cup :(

Not sure that one was at bad as people make out. I was at it and we created a fair few chances. It was the frustration of being unable to break down the 10 man Egyptian defence. One of the most frustrating games (like Lichtenstein 0-0) but not the worst game ever.

The year Steua Bucharest won the European Cup, 1986 or 87? Ended 0-0, was always destined to go to penalties. Even the penalties were unexciting.

Austria vs germany, 1982 world cup finals, fix if ever i saw one, shocking stuff.

Rep ireland vx Northern ireland, friendly, not sure on the year, late ninties i think. Norn ire won one-nil, same days as the scottish cup final between caltic/rangers. About 20,000 turned up..

Actually, on that note, the year Red Star Belgrade won the European Cup, 1990, I think. 0-0, went to penalties. That match sucked so bad, I still see older fans mention it.

W. Germany V Austria in the 82 world cup. The reason the final games in groups are all played simultaneously these days. The Germans won 1-0, scored in the first 10 minutes. That result meant both would go through at the expense of Algeria. The remaining 80 minutes was equivalent to watching a team game consisting of one team of 22.

Tell that to the Italians. They're still sore over Sweden-Denmark.

...'Juventus 0-0 AC Milan, 03.'

Are you serious? I thought that was a master-class in defending! Just because a game isn't 100mph and kick-and-rush (a la premiership) doesn't mean it's crap!

Are you Dunphy in disguise ? "A master-class of defending". Not sure I'd cross the road to see that. There was barely a goal scoring opportunity in the whole game. It wasn't the worst game I've ever seen but it was boring with neither team giving it a go.

Kick and rush a la premiership: I am sure Man U and Arsenal will love to hear their game being described as such.

the first seventy minutes or so of that match were absolutly top class. passing, control and technique were amazing, and better than you would see from man utd or arsenal. the last twenty mins or so and extra time, the game got worse as the ante was upped i suppose. it certainly wasn't boring, but it did lack a certain degree of excitment (or mistakes!) in order to call it a great game.

cheers colinR - i thought i was the only one!!! It was technically brilliant but as you say it tailed off as the end came near ( to be expected in a mojor final).

And yes owls fans - i would class utd as that!

I missed that one, it was 1996 and it was on a Sunday . I went to see UCD Women's team play a College League match instead. Beat UCC 3-2 after being 2-1 down with 15 minutes left .The College Girls went on to win every trophy imaginable in College footie that season. So I made the right choice! :D

1990 WC Final was pretty dire I thought. 1991 European Cup Final (Marseilles vs Red Star) in Bari was a disgrace of a match. Both sides playing for 0-0 and penalties from the start.

What about the Ireland Switzerland world cup qualifier last October. The game was built up but in the end it was a very poor match and seemed to lack the excitement of a game where a place at the world cup finals was at stake.

my memory of that match was that marseilles attacked for the 120 mins, but red star wouldn't budge from outside their box for the whole game, and then got what they wanted on the penalties. i think your being a bit unfair on marseilles there..

Maybe you're right. I was disgusted because it promised to be such a good match and Red Star had so many good players. The game had 0-0 written all over it from early on though I think.

A match a few years ago in the Dutch league involving PSV. PSV needed a point to win the league and their opponents who name escapes me needed a point to stay in the top flight. The back four of both teams passed the ball to each other and there were absolutely no shots on target. What amazed me is that Channel 5 showed it on their Thursday night late night football show! The teams should have been hauled up for cheating as an agreement was clearly reached beforehand.

Two FA Cup finals for me, th already mentioned Liverpool v Man Utd and Aston Villa v Chelsea circa 2001. Haven't seen a boring champions league final tbh. Loads of other meaningless games would probably be worse

Unlike the majority of F.A.I. Cup finals which have been, alright not classics ,but entertaining for the most part!
Especially the Shels v St.Pat's games in the mid 1990's

And yes owls fans - i would class utd as that!Im with you there too. I'm sick of people saying that it was a boring game just because nobody scored (as you say, no mistakes). 4-4 draws can be shocking games of football but people don't see it that way. Milan-Juve CL2003 was a classic.

My list ;

Germany-Austria 1982 Anschluss
Ireland-Norway 1985
England-Norway 1994
Ireland-Egypt 1990
Ireland-Norway 1994 WC
in fact every game Norway play.

Agree with Utd-Pool FAC1996 but Keane was outstanding and they gave the Fat Frog man of the match.
