MONS LIMP HOME FROM LIMERICK
Monaghan United suffered their first defeat of the 2006 season on a cold wet Limerick evening, with a 1-0 reversal. It was a lacklustre performance from the United team which belied the true ability and commitment within the team. At times it seemed that the only player on the pitch was Barry Burke who was filling in for Jim Murphy in the number 2 jersey. Limerick had the measure of United and forced some good saves from reliable Robbie in goals. Limerick's goal came after 28 minutes, Tommy Barrett volleying home from a Colm Heffernan corner.
Despite Limerick's dominance, United almost stole a point in the second half when Robbie Smyth's chip beat Noel Mooney in the Limerick goal but came out off the crossbar. Monaghan only seemed to come alive and decide to play football in the second half but of course this was too little too late. Some harsh referring decisions and a general feeling of defeat meant that the Mons were not really in the game no matter how hard they tried to squeeze Limerick. Darren Sargent was red-carded late-on in what was a dubious sending off and now misses Sunday's visit of Cobh Ramblers.

MANAGERS VIEW – THE COOKE REPORT
On Friday last we headed to Hogan Park to take on the new look Limerick United. Limerick away is always a difficult game, but having had 2 good opening games, we were feeling like we could take something from the game. We played well enough and Robbie Smith almost putting us ahead within 30 seconds and again in the second half almost getting the equaliser when he was unlucky to hit the crossbar.
The players were committed to the game throughout but only really began to bring the game to Limerick in the second half. Sometimes the officials decisions were less favourable to us than they should have been and we had a stonewall penalty denied when David Lee was taken down. Limerick are a good side and we would have been happy with a point but unfortunately it didn’t work out that way.
We would like to have kept our unbeaten run, but hopefully we will be able to keep it unbeaten at home when we take on Cobh on Sunday. Cobh will be a challenge but having played well in our 3 games so far, we will not be scared of them. We have a very young talented side with very few of our players over 22 years old. If they can settle down and not get injured, we will have a lot of options open to us and try and give everyone a game. If we can do this we will be the match for any side.
On Sunday Shane Harte is doubtful with Hamstring problems and Ger O’Callaghan and Stephen Finnegan may not be available due to International Schoolboy duties. Paul Whelan will be back having spent time in North Carolina with the Irish Colleges team. The Under 21’s take on Bohs on Saturday and some of their players will be available for the senior team also.
All in all, I feel that the season has started off quite well and if we can capitalise on our youth and ability, I feel we could have a good season ahead.

The first game of the season against Galway United showed how much fun and athmosphere can be created at a Mons game, but alas it was mostly Galway’s doing. This year it is vital that Mons get the support of the local football fan and we would encourage you all to come out and cheer on United when they play their next game against Cobh this Sunday, 2nd April at 3pm.
Football matches are the one place where you can encourage your children to be as noisy as possible and are a great family day out. Bring your drums and bodhrans and come make some noise!

WOMEN’S KIT ON DISPLAY IN ESPRIT

The new Diadora jerseys are specially designed to fit Women and replicas will shortly be on sale for the fans of Monaghan United. Monaghan United FC will be running their annual Summer Fun Soccer Camp starting on 3rd July to the 7th July at Century Homes Park and Astro Park. The summer camp is an important part of Monaghan United’s annual fundraising to provide great footballing facilities for everyone in the County. We would ask that all parents whose children play football at Monaghan United send their children to this camp to help ensure that your child has football in the future years.
