Scores again anyway
I'm pleasantly surprised with his prolific form at this stage in his career, and i'd have no issue having him called up considering how light we are at the moment for choices. After Parrott, we don't have plenty of options in form. But has there been any indication he'd even want to return? He did retire to focus on his club career

Not that I'm aware of. But club career is one thing - a one-off return to try end your career at a World Cup could be a tempter.

Has it really gone that bad, that discussion starts around calling up a 38 year old League Two player?

Yeah we are such a low ebb, cant remeber when its been so bad like we just beat Portugal and Hungary, really its such a low we are at right now, two games away from the World Cup.

League One.
But yep. I think it has. If Ferguson was fit the debate wouldn't be had I'd say. But the other options are uninspiring at best.

Looks moot now - there's a provisional squad been named including four LoI players, but no mention of McGoldrick

It was never even a remote possibility. Our striker options are not much different now to what they were in November. Absolutely no need to be pulling a retired veteran out of League 1. The only thing that matters in terms of our strikers is that Parrott is fit. He plays the full 90 provided that he is. Azaz was good today against Premier League opposition and will be behind him, probably along with Ogbene. Armstrong or Cannon or Idah if he's back will offer bench options.

I'd have concerns about Ogbene. I know he gives 110% for Ireland but his form can be really hit or miss and the lack of game time would be a big issue. HH will stop probably start him but yeah...I have concerns
Armstrong's on a good run and brings something different so I'd like to see him in the squad

Not sure how his two hamstring injuries have affected him either

Well well. He's publicly said he'd consider a call up...
"Listen, I would reconsider. I don't know what's happening, I've heard there's been loads of injuries. I don't know, I haven't heard nothing.
I don't want to go too deep into it. I've been watching as a fan ever since I retired in 2020, I think it was.
I'm here, I'm scoring goals, I'm just concentrating on scoring goals for Barnsley at the minute. What will be will be."

Call him up Trap!
At this stage is there any harm? We have zero strikers doing well at the moment besides Parrot. Considering HH chose an obscure left back playing in the MLS for the last squad I can't imagine he'd have an issue with it

Doesn’t sound like HH keen on calling him up.
But with Idah and Ogbene on the injury fence I’d call him up.

He bailed on us when we still needed him, glad he didnt get called up today.

That's pretty much it isn't it. Didn't fancy the lean years but a WC shot and his legs suddenly felt good again.

Would agree with that. There's also no injury crisis up front. An out of sorts Ferguson being injured again is not an injury crisis. There's no reason for McGoldrick to be in the squad.

You need 3 strikers in your squad. You've got Parrott. Apart from that:
- Ferguson injured
- Adam Idah called up but last played 19th of December
- Michael Obafemi injured
- Aaron Connolly injured
That leaves you with
- Tom Cannon (struggling at Sheffield United, in and out of the team, hasn't scored since 1st of Jan)
- Sinclair Armstrong (10 goals in 131 games in the championship, not sure he'll ever be prolific enough as a striker, might end up playing like Ogbene. 4 in 41 this season in all comps)
- Aidamo Emakhu (another lad who isn't prolific enough to be a striker, talented but 3 goals in 80 games in the championship)
- Johnny Kenny, who they called up. Operating in the same league as McGoldrick but much less effectively.
At least McGoldrick is banging in goals for fun and playing really well. Could easily see if Idah doesn't make it that they call him up over Cannon, Armstrong or Emakhu.

I'd agree. In principle, yes he doesn't really deserve the call up.
In practice, I wouldn't care if Stephen Ireland came on if he scored the goal that got us to the WC.
Realistically he could just get called up for the playoffs and not make the WC squad. HH was too coy about the topic when announcing which makes me wonder if he's keeping a trick up his sleeve regarding Mcgoldrick

He definitely didn't rule him out. Maybe the May friendlies, to see how much he wants it ?

Either he’s involved now when it matters or not at all IMO. If we qualify, only players who played a role should be involved unless emerging young player or something.
If we don’t qualify, shouldn’t be focused on re-integrating a player of his age.

Agreed with this. I still think there's a question mark around Idah. I'm guessing HH is keeping his options open for the Denmark game

Probably right. Shame he didn’t give us more of his best years.
I wonder if we qualify what bolters might emerge
