I'm not trying to complain but is it any big deal that a few big name players were paid high amounts just to feature in the odd game or two. I know that this helped increase crowds, but did it help achieve anything in the long run. I think we would be better off focusing on the players that have made a success of their careers after using the Eircom League as a springboard to launch their career.

Well if you want to try to attract barstoolers to the League, there's no reason why that cannot be incorporated into this thread. So get the ball rolling then... :D

Can't believe you've missed the obvious Roy Keane and Paul McGrath !

There's 2 broad categories of 'big name' who've played in the LOI. Sadly most are in the first, which is the journey-men players at the twilight stages of their career. Brazilian legend Socrates played a few games for Garforth town in the English tiddly-winks non-league division earlier this season. That doesn't mean a thing. Garforth, and the division they play in, are both still very weak.

The second broad category is local boys who are starting out in their careers. The overseas scouting systems will always miss out on the occassional good talent, and unless they leave football all together they'll naturally end up in the EL ate some point early in their career. McGrath and Keano are 2 classic examples of this. Kevin Doyle could prove to be another one. This group bring much more credibility to our league than the ageing seniors looking for their last pieces of gold before their legs finally give-in on them. People love the whole bragging rights of 'oh I remember watching Roy Keane when he was playing for Cobh at 18yrs old. I could tell then he'd go on to be something special'. Sadly though, very few additional people would be atracted to our game in the hope of 'unearthing' tomorrow's big talents.

First of all CTID I don't even know what you said means. The point I was trying to make was that the Eircom League has plenty of good players that can make a success of themselves in England, or other leagues. I noticed Efan Ekoku's name was mentioned. I don't see how he could be considered a better player than Jason Byrne, Kevin Doyle, even Eamon Zayed maybe. Hopefully in 15/20 years time, we will be mentioning names such as O'Callaghan, Doyle, Byrne, Hoolahan etc as been the best players to have played in the league, rather than big-time charlies who were looking for one last pay cheque.

Edit: Well they weren't all big-time charlies, but you get my point.

Denis Tuert - Derry City
Trevor Hockey (ex-Newcastle United) - Athlone Town
I saw Trevor's one and omly game with Town. He was near the end of his career and, during the game, made a run from the box to near the opposition's box to slide into the dirtiest tsckle I've ever seen, whacking the legs from under the opposing player on the ball - ouch. Can't remember the opposition that day, Think he went to the US or Australia after that.
Sadly, Trevor died a number of years ago.

Leeds United's record goalscorer Peter Lorimer played for UCD, as did Kevin Moran (though before we were in the league).

In a less glamorous link, Ryan Tubridy's grandfather (CS Andrews) also played for us, as did Brian Lenihan and...Ollie Byrne...:o

Bobby Charlton was signed for Waterford by another Man Utd European Cup winner SHAY BRENNAN who was Player/Manager at the time (managed two of the Blues League title wins). Another of their 1968 team-mates - DAVID HERD also played with the Blues in 1970.

CON MARTIN played for Waterford in the 1950s after a successful career with Aston Villa. He played for both Ireland (30 times) and Norhtern Ireland (6) and was also part of the Ireland team which inflicted England's first defeat on home soil at Goodison Park in 1949.

Another possibility for Waterford might be EDDIE McILVENNEY who played with and captained the club for several years. Though Scottish born he captained the USA team which famously defeated England 1-0 at the 1950 World Cup which was regarded as one of the biggest upsets in the history of football at the time.

BOBBY TAMBLING who played for Cork Celtic's League winning team in 1973 is still Chelsea's all-time aggregate League goalscorer.

TREVOR BROOKING turned out for Cork City a few times in the mid-80's.

Urban legend, apparently. The UCD programme researched this a couple of years ago - one of the lads actually got in touch with Socrates through a website - and Socrates said he'd never been in Ireland.

Peter Farrell played for Shamrock Rovers before going on to captain Everton for many years. He also played (and scored) in the famous victory over England at Goodison Park.

Also, while I understand that familiarity can breed contempt, it would be churlish for no-one to mention Johnny Giles in a thread like this.

David Fairclough, the ginger "Super Sub" that scored a lot of important late goals for Liverpool in their European Cup wins, most famously against Saint Etienne in 1977 and Mike Channon, the ex-Southampton legend and now successul horsey man both played for the Harps in the 80s.

They were both pure and utter cack.

Brendan Bradley, the king of League of Ireland football also had a spell with us :D

Anyone remember the talk about Dundalk signing ex-Rangers keeper Andy Goram a few seasons back? What a wind-up that had to be!

Yes youare correct in saying that the EL has got some great players but
Efan Ekoku is far was a far superior player than Eamon Zayed and Jason Byrne will ever be, with the exception of Doyle the others you have mentioned will never be good enough to play in any top divisions , consider international caps plus 8-10 years of premiership experience, then consider Zayed at Bray, and Byrne at Shelbourne- need i say anymore,

Dunphy played for Rovers
2 rugby internationals played for Shels in the 70s, Barry mcGann and Paul McNaughton
Mate of mine's father used to manage Shels and he signed Jimmy Johnstone, who lodged with him. Unfortunately every time Jimmy's wife rang from Scotland looking for her man, he was off down in Leeson Street and she eventually ordered him home to Glasgow.

In fairness, most people named have a fair few international caps for big countries.
