Ruaidhrí Higgins was the cause of his side's downfall tonight

A Ruaidhrí Higgins own-goal gifted Dublin City all three points against Derry City in their eircom Premier Division clash at Dalymount Park tonight.

At a sparsely attended game at Dalymount Park, Derry dominated the first half before Dublin City came into it after the interval.

The winning strike was an own goal which came from a Damien Brennan throw-in, with 64 minutes gone he pumped the ball into the Derry penalty area in the direction of Ben Whelehan.

Derry defender Higgins intercepted the throw-in but inadvertently drove the ball into his own net as he attempted to clear the danger.

In a one-sided first half Derry went close through Gary Beckett on three minutes.

Beckett and Stephen O'Flynn squandered additional opportunities before Ben Whelan conjured up Dublin City's first chance on goal.

It was a tedious match, but the Vikings livened it up with a spirited second-half display.

Three minutes into the half Paul Crowley had a header saved, Damien Brennan later had a speculative effort saved before the only goal came just after the hour mark.

Derry pressed in a more exciting finale, the pick of their chances came the way of Mark Farren but he was denied by Alan Keely.
