Anyone ever in this particular pub in Belfast? I must say that it is a very well preserved old fashioned pub with a very ornate interior and all the tables are bordered by partitions. I bought a t-shirt and I got a free key ring for my visit.:) If you are ever in Belfast, you should pop into this famous alehouse. It is managed by Bass Ireland and owned by the National Trust. Please note that the wearing of football garments is strictly prohibited.:eek:

A MAte of mine from Australia tried to get me to go in on my first visit to the north and I Balked at the name(fearing for my saftey) He tried to convince me that they were a tolerant lot in there, and I tried to convince him that it was because he was Australian,he was non-perturbed and he is well versed in Irish History and well aware of the troubles so I was quite surprised at his niaveity. Was I wrong?

Of course you were wrong but with your attitude on such matters, you're always likely to be wrong.
I was in there about 4 years ago.
Cracking pub and great pint.
The only downside was the smoke.
It wasn't very well ventilated.
There are a lot of good pubs in Belfast city centre.
I felt welcome in all that I visited.
Is Milk still a popular club?

Excuse me what fcuking attitutde, I suggest you re-read my post. I didn't go in because I was worried not because I didn't want to frequent a loyalist/unionist bar.

Nothing to do with my political leaning. I was worried that if they heard my southern accent I might not be Welcome.You do hear some horror stories and while I'm sure some of these are greatly exagerrated I like to live by the better safe than sorry mentality
anyway I accept that I was wrong to be judgmental of the place. never judge a book by its cover etc.etc. I will defo make it a must do for my next visit to Belfast

I'd call into the crown at least once a week prior to the old bus trip home to Derry. Nice pub, good conversation and nobody gives a hoot who you are. Next door is Robinsons - no problems there - with fibber Magees at the back of it, playing traditional music. Generally seen as a very safe environment with taxis easy to get outside.
yeah both the crown and robinsons are good friendly bars aswell as the bars around the university area just up from it. If you cant get a pint in that area or find a bar you like theirs something wrong with you.

Not for much longer NI following in ROI footsteps and I for 1 cant wait.

Love that place. Wasnt there a movie shot there years ago? Old school pub and good food too.
Went into Robinsons with my yank cousin in 98. As soon as the barman heard my accent he walked away so yank had to order. Not worried as this was a very isolated incident and I wouldnt hold it against the bar or the city.

I happened to be out on the drink with some Dub mates in a well known RUC bar in Enniskillen years ago and when I finished my bottle of beer I said something I had never said before.....

I didn't want to frequent a loyalist/unionist bar.
I did some research on it before visiting, including some advice from a belle from Belfast city, and it was deemed perfectly safe for me to enter. AFAIK, the city centre pubs in Belfast have little or no political leanings. Maybe if you went to a pub on the Falls/Shankill Road, you may encounter problems, if you discuss politics.

City centre bars are fine, as are those in University area
the crown wouldnt have many regulars as such, more for the visitors to the city so anyone could drink there

seriosluy though i was in belfast two weeks ago and the city centre seemed fine. was in some pub/restaurant, cant remeber the name.its when you go out the back of castle court shopping centre then straight past all the sex shops and across the road. was fine with no political leanings. though i was a bit wary bout which pubs i frequented in the centre.
whats belfast like for a night out? id like to go up for the craic and stay over night. was in the shamrock near solitude 2 weeks ago.a dump but a very good night in the company of some cliftonville lads wed met earlier in the day
