Well theres only 1 Dublin team in the Setanta Cup so can't show one from there every week.

Turners Cross now has a permanent tv gantry that is big enough to double as a studio, we are League Champions & RTE probably bored of lokking at empty Dublin venues.

It's a bad gantry in imo, the camera can't see all of the pitch.

RTE, Setanta Sports and TG4 to broadcast 37 domestic fixtures throughout 2006 season

The eircom League has today (March 3rd) announced that a total of 17 league fixtures will be broadcast live and 'as live' during the 2006 season by RTE, Setanta Sports and TG4. When added to the FAI Carlsberg Cup and Setanta Sports Cup fixtures being broadcast live, a minimum of 37 domestic fixtures will be broadcast on a live or deferred basis.

The live coverage kicks off with RTE broadcasting the eircom League Premier Division fixture between Cork City and Bohemians from Turner's Cross on Friday, March 24th (kick-off 8.05pm) on RTE Two. RTE will also broadcast a further four Premier Division fixtures in the closing weeks of the season as well as both FAI Carlsberg Cup semi-finals and the final on Sunday December 3rd, making a total of eight live broadcasts.

Setanta Sports will commence a run of live and/or as live matches on five consecutive weekends commencing with Series No. 8 (the weekend of Friday 28th April) up to and including Series No. 12 (the weekend of Friday 2nd June). The matches being broadcast in Series 8 and 9 will be confirmed by March 21st. In addition to the already commenced schedule of 13 Setanta Sports Cup matches, this makes a total of 18 live and as live games.

Meanwhile, TG4 will carry 11 live broadcasts which includes a nine-week continuous (ten matches) run of live broadcasts of eircom League and FAI Cup matches from Friday 25th August to Friday 20th October inclusive. This run includes two FAI Cup quarter-finals on Friday 29th September and Saturday 30th September. TG4 commences its live coverage with the broadcast of an FAI Cup Second Round fixture on Friday 26th May (see schedule below).

While all fixtures apart from the Cork City v Bohemians match may be subject to change, the three broadcasters may also nominate further matches for live and as live broadcast. And as well as all this live and as live action, the popular eircom League Weekly highlights show on TV3 will return to our screens on Monday March 13th after the opening series of fixtures.

TG4 Schedule:
Friday 26th May: FAI Cup Second Round; Friday 25th August: FAI Cup Third Round
Friday 1st September: Premier Division Series No. 23; Friday 8th September: Series 24
Friday 15th September: Series 25; Friday 22nd September: Series 26
Friday 29th September & Saturday 30th September: FAI Cup Quarter Finals
Friday 6th October: Series 27; Friday 13th October: Series No. 28
Friday 20 October: Series 29. All TG4 matches scheduled to kick-off at 7.45pm.

17 not a lot really. Especially when probably 5 or 6 of those will be "as live". 37 sounds great until you look at the huge proportion of that in the Setanta Cup. Still, at least it's some exposure - now if only we can get decent highlights!

03/03/2006, 3:42 PM
Given that they showed the League Cup final last season even though it involved UCD and took place at Belfield Pk. I guess they'll show that too no matter who is in it.

I've said it before - a couple of years ago we were expected to be happy with 6 live games in the season (including 3 cup games!).

Now, with probable euro games live too, we can expect an average of a game per week, or better!

I have to agree with CuanaD 37 games over a season is effectively one a week, and that's about as much as the league can sustain. I'm not sure about the 'as live' broadcasts - is that the lazy man's way out of a good extended highlights program? I'm not sure I could watch a whole 90 mins if I already knew the result.

As Live works for me on Ireland Friendlies on TV 3 so why not the EL.
I'd like to see how the game went anyway. After all there are good 1-0 games and abysmal ones... likewise draws and high scoring games.

I've updated the list above.

Good that live match nights are announced in advance. Pity no matches between start of June & end of August but I suppose will be a few European games in July-August - Last year i think RTE showed 8. Upside is there are saturation coverage for the rest of the season.

You've got the two-week break in there as well, I suppose. The European games will fill in nicely alright. Summer live games are important, I think, as three's no Premiership to counter, yet there were hardly any (non-European) live games on in June to August last season.

RTÉ announce live eircom League details

RTÉ have announced today that they will be providing live coverage of eight of the biggest games of the domestic soccer season.

RTÉ will broadcast five of the biggest games in the eircom league, beginning with the eircom League Premier Division opening fixture between Cork City and Bohemians on Friday, March 24 at 8pm on RTÉ Two, as well as four games at the end of the season as the title race comes to a climax.

As Live works for me on Ireland Friendlies on TV 3 so why not the EL.Don't get me wrong, I could possibly watch a complete re-run of a Derry City or Cork City, but I couldn't do it for two teams I had no interest in. I think we need to be aiming for TV audiences that are not just comprised of fans of the two participant teams, and so I don't think "as live" (deferred) is a good idea for the eL. I think a 90 show with all the weekend's matches would be much more worthwhile. I also think that repeating the highlights program on Thursday night would be a good idea.

As Live works for me on Ireland Friendlies on TV 3 so why not the EL.

For Ireland matches the 'as live' starts straight after the game - is this the case for the eL matches or are they talking about 'as live' the following day? Is it a way for Setanta to fill up their daytime or weekend schedules by showing old matches?

By the way - don't want to be overly negative - its great that so many matches will be broadcast. Are there plans for a good highlights package too - preferably on at a time when younger viewers can watch it. :ball:

I think last year Setanta showed a couple of "as live" games starting at 9.45 on Friday night. Just after the games finished effectively

All the OB Units will be at Bogball games in June to August so seeing a live game at weekends is going to be impossible.... which is why European games get them off the hook. Live games midweek and they can get the OB units back to the GAH pitches by the weekend
