I don't know where he's getting his info from but i'd say something like that is likely.
Stan said he wanted a friendly in May anyway.

* CHILE could provide the next opposition for Ireland at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday, May 24.
Chile, like Ireland, failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup finals after finishing seventh in the 10-team South American World Cup qualifying group.
In their 18 games, Chile scored just 18 goals and conceded 22, but are still a major force and probably ideal preparations for Staunton’s new-look side before that European Championship opener against Germany in Stuttgart on September 2.

It was certainly "Chile" last Wednesday :D . Don't ever remember being at a colder Irish game at Lansdowne - no wonder that clown ran on the pitch to try and get warm.

CHILE are being lined up as the opposition for Steve Staunton's second game in charge of Ireland.
The FAI are hoping to announce that the South Americans will be coming to Dublin in May for the sixth meeting between the sides.
Their last visit was on May 22, 1991 when the sides drew 1-1 in a game that marked Roy Keane's senior debut.
Staunton admitted on Wednesday night that his plans to have an away game in May had fallen through and he was hoping that a home game could be arranged. The Ireland manager had run into problems because of his determination not have his players hanging around at the end of the English season, which finishes earlier than usual this year after the English FA agreed to a request from England manager Sven Goran Eriksson.
"I am not keeping the players hanging around to the end of May or early June because it is a waste of time.
"We've a hard campaign next year so I want them fresh and ready," said Staunton.
Had Chile not agreed to come to Dublin, then Staunton would have taken his players for a week-long training camp in an effort to build on the momentum achieved by this week's impressive 3-0 victory over Sweden.
Staunton has also strengthened his scouting team with the addition of two English-based scouts, John Deehan and Charlie Woods.
Top scouts
Deehan, whose family come from Rooskey, is a former England youth and U21 international who played for Norwich and Aston Villa and also managed the Canaries. He is currently Director of Football at Northampton Town.
Woods has worked closely with Bobby Robson in the past, having scouted for Ipswich Town and Newcastle, and is rated one of the top scouts in these islands.
The game against Sweden drew an attendance of 44,109, which was the second biggest in Europe, beaten only by the 55,000 that watched France lose to Ireland's Group D opponents Slovakia in Paris, and the capacity crowd left Staunton highly impressed.
"To get over 44,000 fans to Lansdowne Road on a very cold night in March speaks volumes," he said.
"There was a feelgood factor on the way to the game, we could see smiles on the fans' faces as we travelled to Lansdowne Road. We want to give the fans something to look forward to.
"Bobby (Robson) couldn't believe the number of fans who turned up for the game."
Staunton added that he was delighted with the response he has got from the players, particularly in relations to the way he has set about doing things.

"The players have been delighted with some of the changes made. Mick Byrne, for example, is a great character and gets into the players' minds and this feelgood factor transferred to the playing field last night. Mick is Mick," said Staunton.
"I was delighted with the performance of the squad. Robbie Keane as captain got a lot more responsibility and he led by example as did Damien Duff. Dunney (Richard Dunne) was my man of the match, a colossus. Joey O'Brien, (Ian) Harte, Steven Reid, Kevin Doyle and Wayne (Henderson), the whole team was great," added Staunton.
Having started with a win over one of the top teams in Europe it would be easy to get carried away but Staunton again insisted that his feet are firmly planted on terra firma.
"I'm not going to get carried away, we have quite a bit of work ahead of us. "We are nowhere near where we need to be. If we go down, we go down attacking with bright, inventive play."

As our next competitive game is away against strong opposition, I’d have quite liked to have set up an away friendly - especially as Staunton surely can't try to be so attacking away from Lansdowne.

This shoudl answer that for you, I agree but it looks like he did try but they could not get an away game.

Just back from the EL launch. Can confirm that it is Chile on the 24th of May. Was told this by an FAI official.

The FAI have confirmed that the Republic of Ireland will play Chile in an international friendly at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday, May 24.
The game gives new manager Steve Staunton another opportunity to call a squad together ahead of the summer break.
Ireland then play Holland at home in August before starting their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign against Germany in Stuttgart on September 2.
Staunton will hope to continue the fine start to his Irish reign, following on from Wednesday's 3-0 victory over World Cup bound Sweden.
"I am pleased that an International game has been confirmed for May. It is important for the players to join together as a squad before the friendly against Holland in August and the September meeting with Germany but still get the benefits of a good summer break," the Irish boss said.
The South American side who last played the Republic of Ireland in 1991 and drew 1-1, are ranked 66th in the FIFA world rankings. Ticket details for this fixture will be announced at a later date.

Could be the "home" games for the Chileans on 25th and 27th of May will feature SOuth American based players while the " away " game may feature a squad of players based in Europe.
Or alternatively those fixtures were provisional as The Kiwis could easily reschedule to the following week !
Where did the rumour we were playing spain come from? Heard it a good few times wednesday night. Chile! not sure how much we'll learn from it, would be in favour and using that game to blood as many new players as we can.

Ireland wont be playing any friendlies with Spain for a very long time to come. I dont think the FAI are big fans of them.

Before Euro 04, Spain were moaning about the brutality after a "friendly" with a fiesty Scotland. The tackles were flying in from the Scots. Someone pulled the plug before half time, game abandoned. I can imagine the Spaniards would be none too happy about taking on a team who take friendlies as serious before a world cup.

Fair enough, tks. I just seem to remember there being a big fuss made over Roy Keane's selection in some obscure early 90s friendly in a regional town / city in Hungary. Maybe it was his first time in the squad, but he didn't get to play??

I meant that is where I knew it from. I remember him making his debut at home but dont remember who the opposition were. now you mention it seem to remember now from his book that he pulled out of something like that and was told he would never play for ireland again by Charlton...better ask owlsfan...he has a couple a copies of it!:D *
