Help please!
Not interesting reading i'm sure but would be delighted if ye could help me out.

After years of problems with floppys, finally got a memory key there about a forthnight ago.
Put everything from college on it.
Now, just tried to open files and this message came up.

"The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open.
Click Ok and then close open dialog boxes to continue."

I don't know what a dialog box is. All i have open is Internet Explorer, the memory key window and the MSWord that i'm trying to open.
After i click ok another 'cannot open' comes up.
And then says "file is locked for editing by 'another user'."
And gives the options to open it as read-only, create a local copy and merge changes later or to receive notification when original copy is available.
When i click any of these it says,
"Word experienced an error trying to open the file
Try these suggestions
*Check the file permissions for the document or drive.(???)
*Make sure there is sufficient free memory (There is!!)
*Open the file with the text recovery convertor (can't find that)

What to do?

What version of Word do you have?
If you haven't already done so, launch Word first, then open the file from within Word.

Starting to think it might just be the pc now as nothing will open on my floppys either. (if they're fecked too, i'm really knackered.)
Will see when i get home.
Computers break my heart.

Strange one. Try these links. They may help you. Read them carefully before trying any of the suggestions out but don't blame me if they make things worst ;)

Re. floppys
Are the files on the floppy word documents too? If it won't read any files from the floppys it more than likely is your floppy drive that problem lies.

Let me know how you get on.

I know that CIT have hardware to reclaim damaged stuff if thats any good to you, its in the new building over by open access.

After that, i dunno but most keys have 40% error code so it shouldn't be that hard to reclaim, do you know anyone working in EMC ... thats what they do but dont know if they can sort out keys, ask around anyway.

Just something to keep in mind here. If you're having trouble with a PC running Microsoft Windows software, try to doing a search in http://google.com/microsoft
Where possible, type in the error message you're getting.
