Stalemate at the Brandywell

Derry City 0 Shelbourne 0

Shelbourne blew two late chances to snatch all three points from this Brandywell blizzard tonight. Substitute Joseph Ndo was central to both, first having a shot deflected onto a post on 85 minutes in this Setanta Cup clash.

The former Cameroon international midfielder then set up Owen Heary for what looked a certain goal two minutes into stoppage time, but the Shels skipper planted his header wide as Derry held on for a point.

Anyone else hear Gary Beckett's post-match gem?

"I'd love to play here on a sunny night, for a change."

Shels were the better side overall.
I don't think I've ever seen a Shels team pass the ball so much. Must be something to do with all the ex Bohs and ex Cork City players they've got now. The snow saved Derry. It made conditions even worse and was a real leveller.
Liam Kearney was useless again!
Glen Crowe got man of the match but I thought Greg O'Halloran shaded it.
Looks like Crowe is getting back to the deadly form he showed at Bohs.

Yeah Derry very poor at keeping possession of the ball. Their play is too direct.

Shels clearly the better team :(

Derry were very poor. We tend to play a very fast game but conditions didn't suit that type of direct game. The passing was awful. Shelbourne were very strong in the middle of the park but I would have reservations about their creative effectiveness throughout the season if O Halloran and Crawford are Fenlons first choice. What has happened to Stuart Byrne - I always thought he was a great player? Is he injured? Happy with a point cnsidering Derry were well of the pace for the 90mins. I think thats now 7 unbeaten v Shels!

Correction - 8 games unbeaten against Shels. Supposedly the best team on the island for the last number of years.

We've got inside their heads now Lofty - their minds are fried whent they know they have to play us....:D

Agree, the combo of Crawford and O'Halloran is not creative enough, Joey Ndo must be put in there at once. Did yous see when he came, we created alot more (and better) chances than we had all game. If Nutsy was to start him every game he would defo be at the top of best eL players come the end of the season...........

To be honest i thought Derry were the better in the second half. In the first half $hel$ showed some good footy but i thought our defence played well, as for Crowe havin a good game, i thought he was ****e

Totally agree about Ndo, can't understand why he wasn't on from the start.

I cant understand why he wasn't starting all last year .... but on the bright side though, Shels were only a shadow of a team they were the year before that and thats always good !! :p

But we were only third best last year, and 5 out of those 8 were last year.
Having said that, Shels aren't the only team who find it difficult to go up to the Brandywell and win.
I thought Shels played the better football, but Derry's strength is their workrate, and it will see them there or thereabouts at the end of the season. Don't forget the conditions were atrocious, and its only the second competitive game of the season.
For myself, I love Joey Ndo, but I think he's more effective playing for an hour, rather than a full match. Kearney disappointed again - seems to get intimidated too easily.

Stuart Byrne is coming back from injury. He played a friendly against Kilkenny. He should be fully fit come Bray Wanderers.

5 games last year ? I know we played you in 3 league and one FAI Cup game. What was the 5th ? And your poor performance last year was down to a very shaky few months at the start of the season. You were very strong in the last series of games.

Having said that, Shels aren't the only team who find it difficult to go up to the Brandywell and win.

If my memory serves me correctly - our record against you at Tolka is as good, if not better, than at Brandywell (he said, not arsed enough to trawl the stats to confirm... :o)

Weather can't be used as an excuse for last nites draw, both teams had to play in that weather so don't be using that excuse!!

Gareth
01/03/2006, 12:54 PM
I think the point about the weather was the weather levelled the standard to being somewhat equal whereas they were saying Shels looked like they could have had the edge if it was sunny.

Anyways Derry came second last year, I'm sure most league teams could say they had a poor record against Derry last season!! :)

Shels played well first half but to be honest did very little in the second.
They certainly look no better than last year.
N'do should start every game, best player you have.
As for Kearney, he was awful, worst Shels player on the pitch until he was subbed, then he was the worst player on their bench.
And I swear you could pick up Setanta if you'd plugged a TV into his ears.;)

Now people knew why City didn't break the bank to keep him. All Ricos ploy to undermine Shels. :D

What about the fact we were the ONLY team in the league you didn't beat the year before, when you were champions ? And we were pure muck at the time......

100% agree, how it's even in question is beyond me. With Ndo in the middle I think we'll have some side this season, strenght all over the park. The defence with Dillion and Hawkins in the middle is also great at building play from the back, which is why we were playing a more passing game (Well, 1% of the reason, the other 99% being a lack of Dave Crawley). With someone like Ndo in the middle to capitalise on that and take the ball and make things happen with it, we should be fairly handy this season. I'm pretty confident we can reclaim the title this year.
