McNEVIN SENDS MONS TO HEAVEN
As pre-season friendlies go, this was one hell of a game to watch. Monaghan United travelled to Belfield to take on UCD last Sunday afternoon and managed to teach the students a thing or two. A well settled Monaghan team took the game to UCD from the off and again played some nice football. Former UCD player Brian Gannon must have felt like he had something to prove to his old Premier Club and punished them with a work rate that would put every other player to shame. He covered the whole pitch in his pursuit of the ball and made some creative passes. Defensively we were strong although Robbie Horgan and later in the second half, Tadhg Murphy had to make some brave and difficult saves to ensure the victory for Monaghan.

It was a quickly taken free kick from Jimmy Fullam in the 53rd minute that left Alan McNevin with little to do but put a toe to the ball in the 6 yard box and past the UCD keeper to have the travelling fans (and Brian Gannon’s family!) cheering like we had just won the World Cup. A victory against a Premier side, even when it is in a friendly, is a joyous occasion and Sunday was no different. UCD had fielded pretty much their full team bar 2 Internationals who were away on Under 21 duty so it was great to see United playing so well and not being afraid to take them on.

A special mention must go to the Stadium Announcer for his wonderful turn of phrase. Shortly after the game resumed after half time he announced that there had been “a multiplicity of substitutions” much to the amusement of the United fans. All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday afternoon, sunny day, great result and a few laughs along the way.

WATCH OUT WATERFORD – THE MONS ARE ON THEIR WAY
Monaghan United will be hoping that their run of good results from their recent friendlies continue as they take on Waterford United in Limerick this coming Saturday evening (February 25th). Monaghan United would like to wish Mark all the best and hope that he enjoys his experience to the full.
