On Ireland, they spoke about Kevin Doyle, Pat Dolan said while he is not a spectacular player he has a great work ethic and will get you goals.

Joey O Brien - Versatile player who got his chance with Bolton and managed to hold his place. Again hard working.

Gary Breen - Seems like a lot people in the media don't like him, but the fact that the last 3 managers picks him says a lot.

They spoke about Liam Miller and Ian Harte as well. And said how brave it was of Staunton to pick some young players for his first game when it might have been easier to pick established players to get a result.

On the Setanta Cup, very little football talk. More about the politics.

They started talking about how the money caught the imagination first and foremost and if it wasn't for that it wouldn't be the competition it is.

Pat Fenlon said it doesn't matter about the money or politics to the Players, they just want to win the competition and be champions of Ireland.

Pat Fenlon played on both sides of the border back in the day, and politics was never a problem to the players.

They then moved on to Derry City playing in Windsor Park and the historic and political significance of it.

They had a political correspondant and Derry City fan (McCann??? something) maybe a Derry fan could provide his name. He started talking about how it will be great that Derry can be back playing in Windsor again and speculated on how many would travel. Said there would prob be very little chance of trouble but people will worry about going all the same.

He had a funny little story at the end of how football is a funny old game amongst supporters. While Daire O Brien jokingly asked "Could there be a day when Glentoran and Linfield fans will go to the Brandywell to cheer for Derry against Cork for example."
McCann said that a politician friend (can't remember his name) of his ran across the street in Belfast to shake his hand and wish him all the best against Linfield. Something along the lines of "I hope to God ye beat the blues on Monday night and put a stop to their run." His politician friend was a Unionist politition, but more importantly...a Glentoran fan.

It was a nice story and said a lot. It's not about your politics or your religion. Its about YOUR club.:ball:

Oh, and by the way, at the end, the Presenter Daire O Brien who I presume is from Cork said to Pat Fenlon "Thanks a lot for ROBBING Cork City of 2 players." Jokingly said of course. Pat Fenlon just smiled.

Hardly! Staunton knows that he will be given time to find his feet as a manager and so far a lot of the spin has been about how Kerr didn't pick the best young/granny talent available because he was under more pressure to perform well in friendlies. I expect Staunton to come out like McCarthy did early on and throw around plenty of first caps in the hope of unearthing a player with the natural talent to make the step-up to international level. I think it's more interesting at this point to see who he favours among the old stagers.

I think they were talking along the lines of his FIRST game and getting a positive result. But it's true for ya, he'll be given loads of time.

About old stagers - He is giving Gary Breen and Kevin Kilbane a go anyway :(

Socialist Workers Party.

Although to be fair McCann has instead been 'SEA' for some time now - Socialist Environmental Alliance.

The man likes the sound of his own voice and can be quite polarising, but is a genuine City fan, and has been well-known in politics in the north since the Civil Rights period.

Author of a rather famous book about Derry and the outbreak of the Troubles : 'War and an Irish Town'.

 Yeah, the reason Nutsy went to Linfield had nothing to do with money

Eamon Mc Cann has been A Derry City fan all his life.
Nell McCafferty has also been a Derry City fan for a lot of her life and possibly should be interviewed about it at some point. She's funny about most things.
