The issue of moving the St Patricks day game has come up at executive level. There is also the possibility of Salthill playing in the All-Ireland final that day. My own inclination would be to fire ahead with a 7.45 KO, but I would like to know what the punters think before I make a recommendation to the executive. Could you set up a poll with 3 options :

Thursday 16th 7.45pm
Friday 17th 7.45pm
Saturday 18th 7.45pm

Thanks,

PD.

Portumna are already there :o
and I'd vote for
Thursday 16th 7.45pm
People are less likely to have hangovers that day and saving themselves for paddies day...

I'd go for saturday, personally I think it will pull a larger crowd.

Can a limerick supporter tell me would there be much of a difference in the amount of travelling supporters between playing the game on either of the 3 days?

things would be really bad if they were still suffering at 7.45 in the evening? if anything it would give them the opportunity to get out and get some fresh air with plenty of entertainment to go along with it.

You should post this in the Limerick forum Terry, to get more feedback

I voted for Friday.I think we should go ahead and play the game on Paddy's Day.It would be good crack and i'd say Limerick would have more supporters down.
If i had to pick one of the other days i'd pick Saturday.Thursday night is a crap night for football IMO.

Paddy's night would be a big no-no I'd say. People will be having a few jars with their mates and families and prob wouldn't be arsed travelling 120 miles round trip after a feed of beer.

Saturday night would be bad too I feel, for Ireland v England at Twickenham is on and a lot of fans would probably have a few scoops watching that, and recovering from Paddys Day.

I think the Thursday night would be ideal from a support point of view, and it would give GUFC some great marketing scope..."Kick Paddys Weekend festivities off at Terryland" kind of thing..........:ball: :ball:

I'd say Paddy's day would work out fine. Everyone's off work, and not everyone just goes on the beer for the day- I'd guess ye'd get a bigger crowd than usual. Good Friday is a great day to have a match, a couple of seasons ago our crowd doubled for a good Friday fixture, just because there's feck all else to do.

remember the 3-0 home drubbing by dundalk on a thurs night because 2 of our lads had to go to a wedding. it more or less finished our hopes last season. now the excuses are getting better for this one its "everyone will be out drinking" and we want to be a professional league? your havin a laugh

I agree with you Joe. I think Thursday night would be better. It would be the night I'd prefer anyway. Paddy's night isn't on for me and I can't see too many travelling on Saturday, but I suppose the poll will tell it's own story.

as well, at least they are sounding out the views of the supporters and that is a very good development. Also the new club brochure is the best club publication i have ever seen. well done to all

I've voted for Paddys Day
I dont think it's right to go chopping and changing so early on in the season. If it is to be changed though i would prefer the saturday to the thursday

I think from Galway's persepctive Paddy's night would be best. People would be around and after having a few beers head to the game.

It is probably not ideal from a travelling support perspective but in fairness you should try to maximise the overall numbers - i.e. would the extra Galway fans outnumber teh few extra Limerick fans you will get. Travelling fans will go either night (because the next day is a day off in every case) - and having it on Paddy's night might mean a few souls less but hardly many.

i wonder will our first game on st patricks day be changed now

In all fairness the county has 2 representatives in croke park that day and
it would be the decent thing to do now to put our game back to saturday
in support of our city and county footballers and hurlers.

I am normally opposed to changing games but these are very good reasons to seek a change

Would Saturday be a more likely date than Thursday? You might get a few Limerick heads up on Saturday evening but Thursday would be a balls. :ball:

General consensus above seems to be Thursday but I personally and a few of the lads wouls definitely prefer Saturday. It's all well and good having a day off work Friday but it's getting to Galway for a 7:45 kick off after work on Thursday thats the balls. :ball:

It all depends on what way they look at it, if they change it that is!

Thursday would have the window where we could attract students to the game, while saturday would be great for the families. If there is going to be a change I would guess it will be Saturday.

General consensus above seems to be thursday

I disagree, From the poll, which was for Galway people ! 3 went for thursday, 9 for Friday and 6 for Saturday (of the people that I know are from Galway). This would tell me that the general concensus would be Saturday if friday was a no go.

I was of course talking about the Limerick fans who, above all else you should be looking to accomodate, shur didn't we bring 500 last season :p :D

I know that LTID, we will have no problem accomodating the lims fans;) , I was just talking about what the galway public want! I personally think we would get more galwegians up on a saturday than a thursday.

BTW I reckon it was closer to 6 hundred ...........or was it just 6:) hard to remember it was so long ago !!!!

clubs Portumna and Salthill Knocknacarra all Ireland finalists. its probably only right to change the game to saturday now. it is an extraordinary situation. Good luck to all

Build it up as kicking off paddys day celebrations and the start of a great big weekend for Galway Sport. I had originally voted for Saturday but Thursday seems to make more sense.

I think it's fairly obvious that Galway United should demand that the GAA shift the date of the club finals.

Not only that Galway should be alowed play Limerick in Croke Park
