According to todays mirror, Paul Doolin is looking to sign Shane Barrett from us. Hes given up on trying to sign Eamonn Zayed from Bray so hes going after Barrett. He would be a big loss imo

This would be terrible if we lost him IMO. I really think him and Mooney are going to strike it off together up front this year. Saw Barrett v Athlone and it looked as if the pace of old was back.
Hopefully this isn't true.

Shane had a disasterous Season last year with that shocking injury and missed a huge amount of football.I'd hate to see him leave.

Paul Doolin has tried to sign most of the players in the league and i'd doubt very much if matthews would let him go so i wouldn't read to much into it.
Hope he doesn't go, but tough one to call. Decimated season last season with no garantee's he'll perform this one so can't justify contract extension, but we know what he's capable of so don't want to lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

In the Sun today it said that Drogs tabled a €30,000 bid for him which De Town rejected. Also reckoned that Barrett did not want to go full time and was happy at De Town.

30k
Probably would have taken that myself. Thats a lot of money.
Hopefully that 30k bid wont come back to haunt us like derrys 50k bid for lavine

the bid for lavine was 27 000 EURO TO BE PRECISE!!!!!

If it had been €27 we'd have been wrong to turn it down!

At the time he was doing really well, but once he signed the long contract, he sat back on his ass, literally!!

How well he was playing is and was irrelevant (although I would debate the really well part). It was silly money for a player well in his 30's.
Still Barrett is a different situation in that at least he's a player with age still on his side...
Heard today that hes gone.Anyone confirm this?If its true and we got any kind of money for him,i think its a good decision.Hes never been the same since his injury in 2003,there have been many times since then that we would have been considering letting him go but were hesitant incase he got back his old form,he hasnt and im sick of waiting. The club need money at the moment much more then they need to be paying a player in the hope that he may get back the form that he had 2 and a half years ago.

if he is gone he has signed from spain and the chances of alan lettindoolin near any of his players is small, 30k is good business considering mooney is in the wings.

If he is gone, we must sign a replacement ASAP. Not very many goals in the strikers we have left.

Respect where its due Bosco, but we can't just cast off the likes of Shane Barrett for an offer of 30 k or similar ....he's a serious contender imho who has been dogged with bad luck and is well worth percivering with because I think he will get there this Season................I'm putting my cards on the table here ...............

True he has been plagued with unfortunate injuries but thats football. The times he has been fit he has still showed no sign of regaining form.2 and a half years is along time waiting for a player and alot of money. Its not everyday that an offer of 30 k comes in for a town player, especially a player who isnt even a definite starter. We'd be taking a big gamble turning it down and could be left kicking ourselves.Dont get me wrong i'd love to see shane stay,i've a good feeling about him and mooney this season but its not the first time i've been optimistic about him but usually i've been left dissapointed. If he does go,i dont think its that important that we sign another player.Remember Liam Kelly?A panic signing made by alan when we had adrian murphy waiting for a chance.I could see the same happening if barret goes, signing some washed up player when we've the likes of paul kelly waiting for a chance.

barrett was out most of last season with horrific injury, to let him go would be ridiculuos. barrett has to be played upfront to get the best out of him. he was played out of position to often but i think this season he will play upfront and will shine there. if we let him go i think we would end up kicking ourselves

Steady on bosco. In fairness shanes season last season cant really be taken into consideration seeing as he was injured for most of it. The previous season matthews put him on the left when it was clear for all to see he wasnt confortable playing there(except matthews of course). I also seem to remember the player himself on one of the tabloid papers saying he did not like being put on the left. Anyway my point is stick him up front and i have no doubt he can be a key player for us. But anyway i have heard he is gone. Another ridiculous situation. who exactly are we left with. Dessie waste of space baker, Andy the snail myler and dave mooney. 30k or not we are not in a position to get rid of players such is the lack of numbers at our disposal.
Christ, does every bloody thing have to be a stick to beat Matthews with Sonic? It's getting extremely tiresome...
€30k is excellent money in the eL, of that there is no doubt (the second highest inter club one, behind Byrne's move to Shels? Must be top 5 anyway).
More of a gamble to turn down, given the injury problems (which have to be taken into consideration) and the fact he's only a year left on his contract.
I would agree that no need to rush out and buy someone. Time for what's left to produce. On the other hand, would €30k get Eamon Zayed? He's turning down Shels and Drogs and Cork because he doesn't want to go full time...

tbh macy i cant imagine that money will go anywhere other than to pay off debts. For example where has the money for dillons transfer gane????

Even better if the money is used to pay off debts. Far more sensible, and about bloody time there was some financial realism at the club.

If this is the truth then this is a great bit of business. I wish Shane all the best and he has been a great servant to the club and maybe this is the move he needs to get his game going again but we couldn't sit by and hope that he got his old form back and turn down a great offer for him.
Best of luck to him, money is money is money and its something we need badly.
Hope its true about Robbie Martin

Pieman, 50k? That couldn't be right. For a player with a history of injury problems and only a year left on his contract? It that is true, it's the best bit of dealing the town has ever done in the transfer market IMO.
Though I think Shane is a great player (has the ability to be one of the top strikers in the league), we haven't seen him fully on form in over two years, mostly through his various injuries/recovery spells. At a time when we're very tight for money, I think we did well.
I also think Robbie Martin is a good signing, he seems to be quite consistant - something we need in our attack force.

I know that we turned down a bid of €40k and were pushing to get over €50k so it seems we got somethuing we liked. Good business I think though when on form he's a real threat. Robbie Martin was also lined up as far as I heard if the Barrett deal went through, UCD are due compensation somewhere around €7-8000 apparently

The best bit of business ever so! I don't think the Barrett / Mooney partnership would've worked out with the style of football we play anyhow and Robbie Martin might fit in better with Mooney.

If the figure is correct then it was great business. I am a great fan of Barrett's but his history with injuries makes Drogheda's move a hugh gamble for them. Robbie Martin and John Martin together again will surely improve matters.;)

i believe that the money from the barrett transfer will be going towards the budget of the players. the trust that is set up will look after the longterm debt.

we are also waiting on a number of grants to be released so we can finish off the ground which would fall under this area.
the treasurer would be the full time office boy:D from what i remember, but it is needed, there will be internet gear sales in the coming months so we'll need it.

Short termism, in my view, if that is the case.
