Ousted Walsall manager Paul Merson has backed former Irish international David Kelly to replace him in the Bescot Stadium hotseat.
Merson was sacked earlier this week after a run of games which had seen his side take just one point from a possible 15 culminated in a 5-0 mauling at the hands of Brentford.
And the ex-Arsenal and England man reckons the club should turn to fans’ favourite Kelly, currently the assistant manager of Coca-Cola Championship side Preston North End.
Merson said: “I don’t want to tell the club its business and it’s not up to me to tell them to approach other clubs, but I think David Kelly would be a great shout.
“He is a legend at the club. It’s the fans’ club and they want him to have the job so I think chairman Jeff Bonser and the board should listen.”
