A while back this guy was all the rage in this forum, havent heard a thing about him in a while and with Theo Walcott making his big move to arsenal it seems he has been forgotten about. Does anyone know if he's still making good progress or first team appearences?

Linked with Palace according to football365
Only played 5 times this season, scoring once while on loan at Wednesday according to soccerbase here: http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=38733 but he was injured early in the season. Also his nationality is down as English.

Leon Best was the most highly rated youth player at Southampton this time last year. He was playing for us at the time. There is a bit of confusion as to what country he has declared for though. Sheffield Wednesday took him on loan this season but he broke is foot after about 1 match:

I'm sure I read or saw somewhere recently that he was being linked with a move to Plymouth.

Last season Walcott was only 15, so was never going to be on anyone's radar bar those of us who had seen him play. Best was 18 and pushing for a first team place.

Best seems to have stood still as a player for a while, and it does indeed look as if he's on he's way out of St. Mary's.

I've been covering the odd reserve match for the Southern Daily Echo and have spoken to Leon a couple of times. I asked him about his nationality, and he was a bit coy, saying he hadn't "made his mind up" who to declare for. That was about 3 months ago.

I'm pretty sure Leon Best declared for England after being involved in our underage set-up. In the meantime, he was overtaken at Southampton by the likes of Theo Walcott and Dexter Blackstock. Don't be surprised if the fcuker comes crawling back to us. He has an Irish mother as far as I know.

He has an Irish mother and an African father. It was his mother that travelled miles with him for football every week and he credited her for this in an interview. In this situation I'll give him the benefit of the doubt if he wants to play for us.

He used to walk from st anns to the county training ground in the city centre most evenings after school, it would be about a 3 mile walk each way, with his mother.

....it doesn't take a lot to work out his father is african, his mothers from dublin.

I can remember one time we were on the way back in a van from a school football match and were talking about nationalities, we were only about 14. Leon said im half english, half irish, and half jamaican. the fella driving the van says your some man leon.

what school did he go to livehead1? Did you play in the same team?

There's a rumour he's either going to sign for Palace or Wednesday. If the latter I am sure Whelan, Partridge, Coughlan and Corr can remind him of his green blood.

I'm pretty sure he's English. He declared for England last year.

Nah, leave it here. He has played plenty of times for us at underage level and never played for England. We'll find out in the next couple of months if he has changed his alliance but for now he's Irish. His mother's Irish, he has no English blood, maybe he really is confused as to who to declare for. :) We should know whenever the next U19 squad is announced anyway.

I don't think he did. He was called up the the England U20 squad but got injured so we don't know whether he would have accepted the call.

That's fair enough. I was under the impression that he pledged his allegiance to England. Therefore, I'd given up on him.
Shouldn't be in the under-21 squad?

F~~k him, I'd leave him where he is. And while we're at it leave leave Kevin Nolan where he is too.

If you want to discuss the player's merits do it here, if you want to discuss his Irishness take it elsewhere.

He's an Irish international, the only international team he has played for is Ireland. Half his family is Irish. Why is this moved to World Football? Until there is any proof that he has switched alliance he has as much right to be talked about in the Ireland forum as anyone.

Can this thread be put back into the Ireland forum? Every suspected 'mercenary' doesn't have to be treated like crap. He's in the U21 squad.

its been moved there because certain people on this forum feel they are in a position of power and like to abuse/misuse it when it comes to so called 'mercenries' or people that they dont want to play for ireland. they dont have any power to stop them playing for the country so this is them 'doing their bit' eejits

Keep this sort of crap to the Cork board or wherever else you normally troll or post or whatever it is that you do when on foot.ie. Any more like this; they'll end up in the rubbish bin and I'll report you to admin.
