Richard Sadlier is reportedly Training with Sunderland.
Sadlier retired with the same hip injury that Sunderland forward Kevin Kyle is recovering from at the minute. A new treatment is now available which Kyle had.
Sadlier was alerted by kyle & mcarthy to this op and had it done and now hopes to restart his career. Sadlier played for McCarthy at Milwall.
A 250,000 insurance pay out was given when Sadlier retired.

Thats great news hope it goes well for him. Could use another striker. I remember hearing at one stage he was talking about playing as an amateur for Drogheda because if he signed pro forms would have to give his money back. Looks like if he can get fit he will have to pay it back, no doubt if he can fulfill his potential wont be long till he makes that kind of money in a few months wages.

I can't see him ever being an option for Ireland again since he's now 27 and retired from football in 2003 after been injured for the best part of a year before that. I wish him well though and it'd be great to see him back on the pitch.

well imagine if he could get a game in before the end of the season, have a good preseason with sunderland and then start banging them in, in the championship, views would be very different then, we would all say he's good to have round the squad, gives us something different etc etc...

I read an article before in the Indo when he turned out for a local amateur side in Dublin, the name escapes me. According to the article, his insurance from when he had to retire would still be paid out if he wasn't being paid to play, had to go through a few hoops just to play for the amateur side. So I really don't know what to make of this.

I think he's missed too much of his formative years to ever be an option. He was regularly injured even before his last big injury.

Great news for him, but i presume that as a condition of his insurance payout, that he would never be aloud to resume professional or full time football again ?

I'd want to see what he can do competetively first -which they can't or he'll have to pay back the dosh -it's going to be a "who blinks first" situation.

I'd be guessing if he reckons he's up to a deal with a championship club he's going to have to come up with the spons himself initially

Didnt Gary Waddock get paid off by the insurance company and then he came back to football and had to repay the insurance money???

Thought I saw him play u21 in 2002? 24 or 25 now?

If hes good enough hes young enough and he was most definitely good enough

Fair play to mick for lettting him train .. Kev Kyle is nearly back fully fit and was over talking to kyler at the weekend and he is raring to go .. says he will try help richie as much as he can ..

Black Cats look at Sadlier

Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy is taking a look at former Millwall striker Richard Sadlier, who retired through injury more than two years ago.

Sadlier announced his retirement in September 2003 at the age of just 24 because of a hip injury.

But having consulted the same American specialist as Black Cats striker Kevin Kyle, who has been out with hip trouble for 17 months, Sadlier is pondering a possible comeback in the north-east.

McCarthy explained: "Sadlier is still here with a view to getting him fit and he's progressing very quickly with his training.

"We will get him out there and take a view on signing him. We will see when he's fit.

"He was a very good player who is trying to come back and if he gets back playing and gets fit, you weigh things up.

"It's open-ended at the moment. We are having a look. He could be a very very good player."

The Dublin-born player scored 41 goals in 165 appearances for Millwall and was once touted as an international replacement for former Sunderland favourite Niall Quinn.

However, two hip operations in 18 months meant he won only one international cap and forced him to admit defeat in his attempt to overcome the injury.

are you suggesting that if he was to come back for ireland that we go back to the charlton years and lamp the ball up to the big fella and let the other feed off him...played with sadlier in underage and he had great feet aswell...i suppose if we were to get results by using charlton "tactics" it would be better than getting no result...but it wouldn't be to kind on the eye:ball:

A Tall striker to get on the end of crosses from Duff + McGeady would be ideal. The long ball option would also be useful.
