well i think Staunton is a hangman and I cannot respect him after what he did in Saipan...end of story. That said I am Irish and I want the team to do well , but it will just eat away at me that he and Donkey Delaney will be branded a sucess then

I wouldn't let it give me a nervous breakdown mate....move on & look in front of you not over your shoulder.....that argument is more than tiresome at this stage

You won't be going on my ignore list....I find some of your posts quite amusing.:D Keep it up!

However, I think most of your views seem to be colored by the whole Saipan debacle....this is a near obsession and in my view you are unable to be objective as a result. You need to let it go.;)

Moot point:I'd say Staunton would be odds on to have been in Croker considering he was destined for an intercounty career before the soccer took over.

A lot of the vitriol here is aimed more at the FAI rather than Staunton I'd say. It's a tough appointment to try and interpret to be honest. I can understand both sides of the "for and against". Can't say I was too happy with it myself. I don't like or dislike Steve Staunton. We don't know who the candidates for the job were so we can't say if he was the most suitable or not.

Cheers....I think my animosity toward the man stems from the fact that I once had a girlfriend (during the 1990 World Cup) and while we were getting down to it in my room, she called out "Stephen", I had a poster on my wall of Stan and the only conclusion I can come to is that the two of them were carrying on behind my back

I think you'll find that McCarthy was the more persistent tackler from behind in that WC.

Actually Louth played in Croke Park in the Hurling last year and got beaten by London. This was in the Nicky Rackard Cup I think.

Your all entitled to your opinions on the new manager but you should never lose sight of the fact that there is only one man who can give the Irish fan's thumbs up or down to this appointment.

So what are Alan Hunter's thoughts on all this?!!!:D ;) :)

Just when it was all startin' to sink in, and I was beginning to relucatantly accept it (I was warming to the idea of the 4 of them going to different games at the weekend, Stan saying he's open to Trundle and the eircom league, etc.), I watched the press conference...
...couldn't string a sentence together between the two of them

I agree with you and I made reference to his boring monotone on a previous thread. He doesn't have any BUZZ about him. He doesn't inspire and has no tactical experience. In the end he brings nothing to the table.

Ultimately I feel he will fail to motivate the players and the Irish public. The press conference today was dismal and depressing. Unless Staunton gets off to an immediate winning start they will get worse. The media enjoy a bit of banter. Staunton doesn't have it. The media will soon lose patience and kill the poor sod off.

Handy money though. Even if he fails, it will not be the worst thing that happened to him.

Not sure how you can make the leap from "not the best public speaker in the world" to "failure at international mgt" but anyway....

Think Stan was (understandably) a bit nervous but after the press conf. he was cracking jokes with some of the media during one-on-one interviews - the lad is well capable of handling himself!

As for the boring monotones etc....try a comedy club for comedy - I'm looking forward to a successful mgt and good results:D

I hope the plan is to have Bobby in our dressing room, giving the team talk and Stan in the opposition dressing room, putting them to sleep.

why was Aldo your choice? did you both sport similar moustaches in the 80's?

I did actually :o

He was my choice because (a) He had managerial experience and some success; (b) He's an ex-Irish international; (c) He would bring passion to the job and (d) I don't think there would be the same negatively surrounding the appointment. I just don't see what Staunton possesses that he doesn't and he should have been interviewed by the FAI out of courtesy even if Delaney had made his mind up.

On a positive note: Appointment of Charlton not widely applauded and he was a success; appointment of Kerr widely applauded and he failed. Staunton not widely applauded and he will be a............

Saipan - don't mention the war!

Some of us think there's more to being a manager than having played a lot of games.
You obviously come from the same school of thought as John Delaney, which gives your opinion a zero rating in my book.

Well to be fair to jockser I think he was making the point that some people put public speaking as one of the main credentials you need to be a top class manager. There is no doubt that Bobby Robson was fare more comfortable infront of the media than Stan was. But by all accounts from the journalists on the Hub last night, the minute he did one on one interviews Staunton was very talkative and informative. The players certainly responded to him in 2002 as that team was pretty average without keane but Staunton showed leadership skills after the debacle of Saipan. I think that is more important than whether he can crack a few joke or give great press conferences. Brian Kerr gave a great 1st press conference

I agree that there is indeed more to a manager than having played a lot of games. However, I do not put his public speaking performance top or any where near top of that list. Did you ever hear Bob Paisley, Kenny Dalglish even Fergie in his early years.

If by some miracle, Stan knows something about coaching, he'll need to impart that knowledge onto the players. How do you expect him to do that!
For someone who speaks at a rate of 1 word per minute, he wont get much said during the halftime break.

Peader, you know well there is a major difference between speaking at a press conference and speaking to your "peers" as our new boss will be doing most of the time. I still do not agree that public speaking and being a top class manager go hand in hand. However, I do agree that the need and ability to communicate is vital, from what I have seen so far I am reasonably confident that he can do it and do it well. Time will tell of course.

I suppose you think that's acceptable, jockser Delaney, do you!

It's reasonable to hire a man for the national coaching job, even though no one knows the extent of his coaching knowledge/ability!

He had his chance to alay our fears somewhat, in the press conference yesterday but what do we get?!

The Press Conference was just a PR formality/courtesy. It was no different to any other similar conference I've heard.
