View Full Version : Done and Dusted so time to get behind the team

The Stan, Bobby, Kev and Alan show starts on Monday. And we can't change the channel. So I for one am looking forward to the Euro draw on the 27th. I don't care who we get because it is impossible to say which teams will be great, good or crap come the actual games. A big name team having had a crap WC might not be so bad. Staunton has to get the team playing decent football (and I believe that will happen). We need some fresh blood and that will mean bringing in a few players born outside the country AKA Kevin Nolan.

Agree with all of the above with the exception of the last sentence. I don't think it matters where the fresh blood is born, but I'm certainly not sure about Nolan.

The thread title just about says it all. Whether we agree with the appointment or not (as it happens given the alternatives I do agree with the appointment) it's still going ahead so roll on Jan 27th and let's see who we get in the draw for Euro 2008.
utside the country AKA Kevin Nolan.

The Sweden game in March will be interesting both from the point of view of the performance and the crowd's reaction to the new management team. However, even if we lose, don't despair, Big Jack lost the first one 0-1 at home to Wales.
I am not sure I understand the sentiment that wishes we lose every game though. What would be the problem if the gamble pays off and it's a success. Surely everyone should then be happy

It is time to get behind the team but Nolan can go take a jump. He's made it quiet clear that he wants to play for England.
Best of luck to Stan and the rest.

I can never understand why people "contribute" to a thread when they clearly don't support the team or the player in question. I'm not talking about only saying good things about a particular team or player, constructive criticism and debate are positive things. However it's something else entirely to wish that the team loses. There's a lot of people on this site with major chips on their shoulders.

I think in fairness looking at the Staunton Manager thread, he has 100% support already. The supporters are willing to get behind the team, but the FAI on the other hand have hit a new low... It should be highlighted that Bobby Robson is at worst a very decent coup, but a headhunting process which ultimately recruits someone whose non-playing experience is limited to allegedly coaching the defenders at a Division Two side in England is nonsense. Also particularly annoys me the way Delaney will come out and act all tight-lipped (re Kerr's contract, NLSA meetings, Staunton's appointment) and then leak everything to the press.
I didn't think it was possible, but I think the FAI have reached a new low here with their overall handling of the appointment...
Enthusiasm for Ireland matches been ending for some time now.
I'd probably match on tv but unsure if will go to games in future. Atmosphere would be better in living room than Lansdowne.
If Kevin Doyle is playing against Sweden i'd go otherwise no interest.
Says a lot about the current squad that a motivating manager is a priority. Why are the players not motivated to play for their country? Too many mercenaries with no interest when qualification gone or they've got transfer to big club?

I don't think anyone has said that outside of here, have they? It says nothing about the squad that some random punter on foot.ie thinks Staunton would be a good choice because he can motivate.

He should get a start against Sweden,If Morrisson gets the nod ahead of him I'll be very disappointed. We need to use the friendlies in a proper way this time around, most of the teams we beat in friendlies are in the World Cup.

In my opinion its not just about the national team I genuinely love football in this country and that includes the international team all the way down to junior football......
As CEO, Delaney has a responsibility to all levels, and I am not happy with this man in that role, thus in the long run it would in my opinion be better for the game if that man is ousted. Staunton being a disaster will do for starters....

Do people actually think Delaney will resign if Staunton turns out to be a flop?! Some people are so naive!

How ironic. I don't know if it was you but one of the things people damn the FAI with is letting personal bias influence decisions for the betterment of the game in ireland.

Can the mods do something about all the acid-tongued hostility on here - I'm getting sick of reading the same tripe of **** & ****. There's alot of unfounded contributions that are served up as "opinions".....are there not boundries for this? Can some people not have a genuine debate when they disagree?

Can't believe Irish fans are activly hoping we lose every game. In my eyes, they are not supporters. Even at club level, many who support their teams dispise the men in charge but would never go so far as hoping they actually get "tanked".
I've been attacked on other threads for expressing a desire to see England do well at the World Cup because of an interest I have in their players. In my eyes a far bigger "crime" is going unpunished here when Irish people are hoping our team lose. I just can't imagine ever doing that.
Stan & Bobby have my full backing and support and i hope it works out. I'm almost certain ousting Delaney (which I'm not against as such) but as a result failing miserabley to qualify for another major tournament, will not be a battle won for grassroots football in this country.
While I'm not the FAI's biggest fan, I do recognise some of the good work they have done in recent times particulary at grassroots level where I have been heavily involved. One department close to my heart would be the Coach Education department who like the organisation themselves can be a little slack administratively at time but the work they do all year round educating Irish coaches is quality and vital to the nuturing of future talent in this country.

If Staunton isn't seen as a motivator then what else could he possibly bring to the job? He has little coaching experience (IMO he only on walsall books as coach as makes easier to justify 37 year old player), no management experience, never worked with his assistants or technical advisors.

Never try and look into the mind of Delaney...it's just not worth it!

Same argument stands. Do people think that Staunton being a flop will suddenly lead to an uprising outside Merrion Square (certainly won't happen inside), while if Stan's a success, people will suddenly think Delaney's great?
The rest of your post was just retarded. The aul ignore list gets bigger...

I'm genuinely surprised that Staunton got the job because of his lack of experience, but I for one will be fully supportive of him when he takes up the mantle of new boss. So good luck Stan. But Delaney will never be great in my eyes as I feel he shafted Kerr in the way he was 'let go'. He showed no respect to a man that served his country well over the years. I personally believe it was time for Kerr to go but the way it was handled lacked balls on Delaney's part.

Agree totally except for Nolan. Hasn't his "amnesty" expired anyway?

Back on topic: I don't know anyone who has any objection with Steve Staunton himself. He has always done his best for Ireland when called upon and is doing that again. The question is would we be in a better position if we were caling on him in five years time when he's got some more experience under his belt.
I'm looking forward to the draw though to see where we'll all be off to.
