The premier odds look about right, although I don't know why Bohs are bracketed with the Drogs at 14/1. Good value for the Drogs but bad value for Bohs. Best bets of the lot would be to back Galway for the 1st division and lay Shamrock Rovers!!

Great value for us - going to throw a few bob on an each way bet

What's the point in betting on a team to win the league? If you fancy Shelbourne, are you going to give away money on the chance that you will get a paltry return in 11 months? Makes no sense.

Well I know somwbody who put 300e on drogs to win the cup at 10/1. Do you think it was worth the wait for him?

Well he must have money to burn. Backing an outsider at 10/1 to win the Cup and wait almost a year for a return is a stupid bet, he got lucky with Drogheda winning it. Anyone who gambles like that probably gives most of their earnings to Paddy Power anyway. Mugs game.

I'm sure this is an other guy who "wins more than he loses" though. Funny how everyone who gambles seems to claim that. From working in a bookies I know that is bull****, it is a license to print money, especially these football bets.

Probably, a bit like the lad I work with yesterday who did a 1 euro yankee (costing 11 euro) and got back over 1200 euro :D

of course yeah.

The bookies just give money away, you'll never see a rich bookmaker. These football bets are costing them a fortune, I wonder why they go to so much effort publicising them? Madness. If Paddy Powers and Ladbrokes are giving money away why don't they just give it to me?

Well in theory at least your bet lasts for a full season so you could call it a "value bet".

As far as i can see the 1st division is pot luck with any of 6-7 teams in with a chance of winning whereas the Premier much smaller pool of potential winners.

I think Drogs at 10/1 is a far better outside chance. Do the bookies know something about special about Sligo? While we at UCD have certainly not improved our squad greatly Bray are as good as last season having retained their best players and added Doyle, why are Sligo rated more likely to win the league?

They're bracketed together @ 66/1 in the updated odds.

I know it's totally irrelevant BUT...seeing as Sligo didn't beat us in four attempts last year (three 1-1 draws and a 3-1 win for us) and that there was 2 points seperating the sides at the end of the season, and we won promotion by doing what rarely is done in the playoffs, ie: lower league side winning out against the Premier team over 2 legs.

And taking into account that Sligo have let alot more players go then have come in (Keith Foy etc coming in) I really fail to see how we are 100/1 and Sligo are half that on 50/1:eek: I mean that's just plain crazy. It's also crazy that they are ahead of Bray and UCD, given that there is a huge "wait and see" factor to both promoted teams and a few others to boot.

Anyhoo, not outraged or anything, it's not like I was going to stick a ton on ourselves for the title or anything(:o ) But it just shows how little the bookies care about the lower half of the league. Mind you if I can get odds on us staying up that reflect odds on us winning the league, then I might dust off the money belt for that one...

Maynard

P.S I'd stick a few quid on Giller's Dundalk for the 1st Division title. Really think they'll be in with a great shout this year.

Although @ 66-1 i think a cheeky €5 is on the cards.

Drogheda deserve to be 10/1 they finished 29 points behind cork city last season cant really see them challenging. i think it will be the same top 3 again this year. in the first division i would stay away from rovers. i had a bet on gufc at 10/1 a couple of weeks ago so i would say the value is gone on them. dont bet unless you have some very good reason to think that a teams odds are not representitive of their chances. as the man said earlier you will never see a poor bookie. all the advertising, staff and premises costs and they are still minting it.

29 points behind but have built on their side, unlike cork.

stay away from rovers for value or because we wont stroll the division?

Derry are by far the best value there. 11/2 for a team that went to the last day!

we have 15 full time players so we really should be finishing ahead of dublin city, bray etc. we got rid of a lot cr*p players and brought in real quality players from england

Both really. Rovers deserved to be beaten in a 2 legged play-off with the team that finished 2nd in div one last season. Their form was terrible in the second half of the season. Since then i can see no vast improvement in their squad. Every team in div one will be gunning to beat rovers. If you look at the last years relegated sides from the english league the most of them are not in contention for the title eg Nottingham Forest. its just an observation not an attack on rovers, i look forward to your visit to terryland this season.

Roverstillidie
14/02/2006, 3:04 PM
no vast improvement? roddy out scully in. there is your vast improvement right there.

skull has gotten rid off all the rod squad mecenaries like mcdonough and brought in a young, hungry side who know the division. we lost the playoff because a: rod had them so unfit because he arranged training around his plastering and b: so many of the players he brought in were gutless mercenaries.

no chance of either with scully.

For me it will have to be £10 on Derry City.

Roverstillidie
14/02/2006, 3:52 PM
bit of both. we sacked him for general scallywaggery and deservedly so. but at the time you sacked the man who had won you your first league in 23 (?) years and only your second in 50 odd. it looked bizarre from the outside

hindsight over roddy versus rabid need to insult bohs. a conundrum alright!
