Can anybody confirm (or deny) that Barry Ryan of Limerick holds the record for the fastest goal in League of Ireland football?
I was at the game against Kilkenny when he scored after 7 or 8 seconds, (this was the season we got promoted under Sam Allerdyce) and I think I remember it being credited as the fastest at that time.
I've just been on the official FAI website, and, surprise surprise, they didnt have it, or any other record for that matter. The site is 50% advertising and 50% garbage.

Fastest I've seen is about 10 seconds (think that's what the papers gave) for Glen Crowe for Bohs v. UCD in 2000/01. Crowe went on to get a hat-trick as Bohs won 4-3 - great game.

Peter Hutton against us at richmond December 2002. Scored after 7 seconds but we won 3-1. Was away at the time but remember "watching" it on livescore.

Was that Hutton or Liam Coyle? Remember a goal when the entire Rovers team stood off Coyle from tip and he waltzed through the mud to go up and score. The mud probably slowed him down though. Won TV3's Goal of the Month somehow too!

Hutton collected Liam Coyle's pass following the kick-off to shoot past Tony O'Dowd with just seven seconds on the clock.

It was a horrible wet Monday night and Coyler only lasted another couple of minutes after the goal. He literally gave-up and you couldn't blame him.

A little discrepancy with the time of the goal in this article from UEFA.com

Landmark goal
On Monday evening, Shamrock Rovers FC moved within three points of Cork as they registered a 3-1 win against Derry City FC. Derry went ahead after just nine seconds when Peter Hutton scored the fastest goal in the history of the league.

I don't think there is a "list" as such, however apart from the Peter Hutton goal, a quick Google uncovers the following:

Kieran O Reilly - Cobh Ramblers website
Leading scorer in the Eircom League first Div for the 1st part of the season with possibly the fastest goal in league history with a 14 sec goal against Monaghan.

UCD v Bohs (February 2001) Report from The Irish Examiner
The match had an amazing start when Crowe nodded home a long ball from veteran defender Tony O’Connor over the head of the advancing Barry Ryan.
The goal came after just eleven seconds. But Crowe was denied a place in the history books as the scorer of the fastest goal of all time in the Eircom League.
Dublin referee John Feighery had ordered a second kick off as several players had encroached the centre circle. The official timing for the goal was later revealed as 17 seconds by fourth official Eddie Barr.

Beyond those, I personally remember John McDaid scoring very early in a game for Derry City (circa 1988) - 16 seconds I think

I wuold very much doubt there is an official list, osarusan - sorry! Just the way the league is run...

Someone else have a search and try and find info about it.

If it was a Cork goal that was quickest atleast HALF of the Cork members of Foot.ie would be on here tellin' us about it. "We're the quickest - biy!"

Lads, AFAIK ... it was a Bohs player (home game not in Dalyer??) and 13 seconds and it was record (it stands counted) and it was about 20-30 year ago from what i remember. Was on SportsCall for a few weeks about three years ago trying to confirm it.

If it was scored recently ... we'd all know who it was in fairness.

Well past time to create a list, then?

Based on the thread so far, we have (with lots of gaps to plug, help please!!!):

Scorer Team Time (secs) Match Date
Glen Crowe Boh ? Bray v Boh 2001
? Mon 6-10 Dundalk v Monaghan ?
Barry Ryan Kkenny 7 Kilkenny v Limerick 1991/2
Peter Hutton Derry 7/9 Shamrock v Derry * 17 Dec 2002
Kieran O'Reilly Cobh 9/14 Cobh v Monaghan Apr 2005
Glen Crowe Boh 9.97/10 UCD v Bohs ** Feb 2001
John Bacon Derry 12 Derry v Dundalk early 90s
AN Other Boh 13 Boh v ? *** ca.1985-1995
Donal Goldan ATFC 13 AT v Derry Apr/May 1995
Kevin Doyle CC 15/30 CCFC v Waterford 5 Apr 2004
John McDaid Derry 16 ?? ca. 1988

* in Richmond Pk, ** Should that be Bohs v UCD? *** not in DP; where?

Crowe v Bray cannot be 2001, as the only Bray v Bohs that calendar year was 0-0 (30/09/01). It could conceivably be 17/12/00 (3-1) or 24/03/02 (2-2), or if it was a Cup replay 12/02/02 (0-4). braywanderers.com is down at the moment for maintenance, I'll check when it's back!

And there are wide variations in some of the claimed fast goals, especially O'Reilly and Doyle.

Lets get this one done!

How do you do a table here????

Scorer Team Time Match Date

Glen Crowe Boh 9.97/10 UCD v Bohs ** Feb 2001
John Bacon Derry 12 Derry v Dundalk early 90s
AN Other Boh 13 Boh v ? *** ca.1985-1995
Donal Goldan ATFC 13 AT v Derry Apr/May 1995
Michael Funston Harps 14 Harps v Waterford 8 May 2015

Glen Crowe was UCD v Bohs in Belfield Park.

Time of the goal depends on what kick off your counting from

littlebray
15/05/2015, 9:14 PM
I think it should be timed from the real KO (2nd), and footnoted. I won't update the list again for a bit to see if we can get any of the missing details.

littlebray
17/05/2015, 11:44 AM
Crowe at Bray v Bohs in 2001 seems to be a myth (maybe confused with the Belfield one?) as Bohs failed to score in the Carlisle in that calendar year. The previous year, Webb was their only scorer at that venue (17/12/00, 47mins, pen) and though Crowe scored by the seaside in 2002 it was a 76th min effort on 22/03/02.

I retimed the Hutton goal a few times from the video, it seemed to be just over 9 seconds. I got 9.38 with my best effort. Any improved offers?

A contemporary newspaper report gave a more precise timing for Crowe at UCD v Bohs. Any objections?

So unless someone can verify that Monaghan goal in Oriel with a little more detail we're left with

Barry Ryan K'kenny 7 Kilkenny v Limerick 1991/2
Peter Hutton Derry 9.38 Shamrock Rvrs v Derry 17 Dec 2002
Glen Crowe Boh 9.96 UCD v Boh 14 Feb 2001
Kieran O'Reilly Cobh 9/14 Cobh v Monaghan Apr 2005
John Bacon Derry 12 Derry v Dundalk early 90s
AN Other Boh 13 Boh v ? *** ca.1985-1995
Donal Goldan ATFC 13 AT v Derry Apr/May 1995
Michael Funston Harps 14 Harps v Waterford 8 May 2015
Kevin Doyle CC 15/30 CCFC v Waterford 5 Apr 2004
John McDaid Derry 16 ?? ca. 1988

It would be nice to get better details for that Top Ten. Somebody has them, somewhere ...

PS: A couple of other fastests, for comparison:

UEFA Champions League
Roy Makaay Bayern Munich 10.2 Bayern Munich v Real Madrid 2007
