As the queues at the cash machines lengthen and the credit card terminals in shops start to glow, it’s hard not to think that Christmas is getting even more commercial, if that is possible.

It is not alone in that- looking back over the football year, it’s amazing how often matters on the pitch are overshadowed by finances off it. But for all the talk of Chelsea’s millions, the commercialization is happening closer to home.

Shamrock Rovers cropped up all too often in the headlines for financial rather than football reasons this season, and as professionalism really began to take hold of the eircom League, Shelbourne felt able to turn down what was, by eircom League standards, a phenomenal amount of money for top scorer Jason Byrne.

Just looking through a guide to the World Cup venues and the amount that are named after sponsors is shocking. But the thing is that existing FIFA sponsors mean that some companies won't get the benefits during the tournament as it clashes with FIFA's deals.
