Not that anyone is safe but its well advised to chekc phpbb.com daily or weekly for updates to forum code!! There are patches all the time. Yesterday released another. You need to be on top of that to give yourself any chance and even then who knows.

Hope ye sort it out soon lads.

The message left behind is weird. It may be someone covering their tracks but it looks like sheer vandalism as opposed to something football orientated. It's not funny to be honest. People put effort into maintaining sites. Can it be retrieved Gareth or will they have to rebuild?

Can be retreived if there is a recent full db back up. A daily scheduled back-up is simple to do and helps recovery if forum is brought down.
A Forum I run has had two recent but unsuccessful attacks. Some ppl leave certain folders or files on the server after the install leaving them vunerable to hackers.

phpbb as Gareth said released an update yesterday and I immediately installed it. Anypne running a phpbb forum should ensure it is version 2.0.19

I am a webbuilding beginner (releasing my first real proper site this weekend) but one basic thing: ALWAYS HAVE BACK-UPS MADE !! This is IMO a very basic thing, and every decent webhost offers it these days (well, every decent paid host anyway)

They seem to have a forward on the url back to the homepage. Well it only took a few days to remove the offending message.
