New Longford assistant manager Alan Matthews is looking forward to maintaining Longford's progress in league football after teaming up with Martin Lawlor at the midland club.
Matthews spent four years as right-hand man at Shelbourne before leaving the club in the wake of Dermot Keely's resignation at the end of the last season.

He is joined by Alan O'Neill and Aaron O'Callaghan in the new management team which will be hoping to improve on the club's performance last year that narrowly saw them avoid relegation.

O'Neill is a former Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper and he will be the goalkeeping coach under Lawlor. O'Callaghan joins the club as a coach having spent last season playing with Dundalk.

"I'm glad to be involved at Longford," Matthews told A2Zsoccer.com. I had four very happy years at Shels and although I was disappointed at the way things finished, but I still remain on good terms with everyone at the club and wish them all the best for the future.

"That's football really and you learn to live with it. Martin has some excellent plans for Longford Town and it's exciting to be involved with a new challenge. I'm glad to be still involved in the game," he said.

Matthews also confirmed that the club are chasing the signature of Barry Ferguson who is currently playing in England.

Martin Lawlor is considering travelling to England to talk to the Home Farm player who has been linked with a return to the eircom League.
