Sterling sports report

Sir - I was surprised to read in Gerry McDermott's article today, December 13, that Shelbourne could be selling top scorer Jason Byrne for £600,000Stg

Why was a transfer fee between an Irish and a Sweedish club quoted in the British currency?

An example, I think, of Anglo-centric sports writing.

* Sir - May I propose a simple solution to the problem of whether to support England in the World Cup?

Avery John and his team mates from Trinidad and Tobago will take to the field against the auld enemy on June 15 in Nuremberg.

John is Longford Town's former star wing-back and the only player in the competition to have played in our National League.

I, for one, will be proud to cheer on the men of Trinidad and Tobago when they take on the prima donnas of the England team.

I will ask Peter Hanrahan's permission before I support Avery Scum, Scum Scum.
