Can't say that I ever want Ingerland to do well in any major tornament, quailifiers, friendlies, U21, schoolboy football, international trade talks (I know they count as Britain there), or even single handed round the world sailing attempts. Norn Iron I don't really ever want to win and their kind enough to grant me that wish.
I think that in terms of Ireland's biggest rivals (from an Irish point of view, not a reciprical one,) it would have to be Ingerland. This would be the game where the atmosphere would be at its most bitter and when the results are read at the end of a game it will always get the biggest cheer if they lose.
In regards of the Germany v Holland rivalary it apparently only vicously surfaced in the 1988 European championships. Then it was almost completely one way; Dutch towards German, however now the Germans are indulging with equal venom in the rivalary.

doubt it. he is probably one of them "weirdos" that goes and studies something useful that will further his career than something which will aid him in being a pedantic fool.
If I understood that properly Klein4 was supporting you rather than attacking you Livehead.
Anyway back to the point of the thread. Living in Ireland or the UK we have high exposure to the English media. Even if I was the type of person to put what happened between our countries in the past to one side, the carry-on of their media only serves to fan the flames. So for me England would still be rival number 1. However, I've lived in Germany and The Czech Republic for the last 4 years so my will for them to loose everything has reduced a lot because if they do win something it's very easy for me to avoid the gloating and pretend it didn't happen ;) I have to say the sweetest feeling I got from watching Ireland play was when Robbie Keane got the equaliser against Germany in the last World Cup. I was working in Germany at the time and there was about 20 of us watching it in the social room (me and 19 Germans). I had to listen to the arrogant b@stards for almost 75 mins after Klose scored saying things like "Ah the Guinness drinkers are going to lose" the looks on their faces when Keane scored was priceless :D

England. And to a lesser extent the Swiss and the Dutch.

I hate the swiss.
just cause I think they came to lansdowne and got a win that they didnt really deserve or have to really fight for and earn.
they seem to have misplaced arrogance that doesnt really sit well with their ability. I deffo wouldnt see the dutch as rivals.we always do alrite against em.

The Swiss have misplaced arrogance?! We were the ones talking about how we should easily beat them because they're not very good. If the Swiss had a high opinion of themselves, the four results showed they were entitled to. What a nonsense post! A perfect example, in fact, of misplaced arrogance!

Yeah we have done well against them recently but not in the 3 competitive games we played against them before the qualifiers for WC 2002. They knocked us out of Euro 88, WC 94 and beat us in a playoff for Euro 96. So to finally beat them in 2001 was sweet revenge :)

I was referring to their general standing in the world game and to the way they have no impact at tournaments they get to. pretty straightforward really.

England and then the North !
Have to say I had mixed feelings when the North beat England. I was glad to see our fellow Irish brothers do well, but there is a section of the Northern Ireland fans that are very anti ROI and sectarian. The same section that booed and sent death threats to Neil Lennon. Very hard to cheer on a team with fans like that. I think they would consider ROI as their biggest rivals.
I would say that I like to see England fail simply cos they're media build them up so much and are always left disappointed - funny.

Your issue is with the Irish team, not the Swiss then.
they seem to have misplaced arrogance that doesnt really sit well with their ability.
Well they've finished 2 places above Ireland, never lost to Ireland, and won once in "Fortress Lansdowne" in the last 2 qualifying tournaments so surely they are entitled to feel that they are better than Ireland?
Your later quote
I was referring to their general standing in the world game and to the way they have no impact at tournaments they get to. pretty straightforward really.
Like Ireland's total of 2 wins in World Cup Finals? One of which was against those world beaters Saudi Arabia.
All facts, not opinions.

Ill yawn with you calvin, why do swiss come onto this forum to remind us how bad we are? Give us a break, we're going through a rough time! Go to the World football section, or foot.toblerone eating cheesey *******s! Im sorry but you kicked us out of the world cup, can someone kick them off our website?
Back to the point, biggest rivals.. England first without a doubt, press, media hype, arrogance! Just the feeling of david and goliath when beating them.
Spain: We owe them a big one.
Switzerland and Israel: A handy 4-1 beating, make it look easy.
Nigeria: I hate playing them.
Ill yawn with you calvin, why do swiss come onto this forum to remind us how bad we are? Give us a break, we're going through a rough time! .
I'm not Swiss. Why would that impact upon my postings anyway? Nice to see that reasoned intelligent debate is dead. Who need facts when you've got emotions?
Of course England has to be our biggest rival given our history.
Anyone who thinks Switzerland are Ireland's biggest rivals are obviously focusing on 4 years of hurt instead of 800! ;)

How is it possible for me to be wrong on this?
I am the only person in the world who could be right about how I feel about the swiss! both feech and plasticpaddy/pineapple stew are making assumptions I never made in order to start an argument. so yeah I do find it boring hence the yawning.you are sayin anybody who says anything you dont agree with shouldnt be allowed post? pretty boring forum your going to have then, but then again that may suit you!

its international sport. war by other means etc.
emotion rules this one by its fundamental nature.
you cant 'stick to the footie' on a question like this. the debate has split into those who say a: engerland every time or b: engerland but the swiss/israelis/dutch/whoever are also due a tanking.
its the nature of the beast

Surely the past 800 years have informed most Irish people's opinion of the English? My point is that this also manifests itself in sport.
What assumptions have I made about you Klein4? I disagreed with your post and gave reasons why. Your response was to start yawning, you are so bored by this subject that you have made multiple postings on it!

well the main assumption you made was that I was comparing the swiss to Ireland, when all I said was I hate them. you assume that I have to justify any negative feelings towards them by comparing them with Ireland. Dunno about "rival" but our biggest enemy lies within. I reckon we have the worst national stadium of any side in the FIFA top 50 rankings & the most incompetent administrators of (certain aspects of) the game. I say "certain aspects" as I'm sure Owls fan will be onto me in a flash defending the FAI's grassroots efforts! But the FAI's handling of any affairs, including media relations, relating to the senior & U21 international sides is disgraceful. The government has been no bloody help either. The press here reports on English football like it's our own national league whereas I think the emphasis on English football reporting should at least include highlighting any Irish involvement. I was out with mates at Christmas, all regular Irish watchers, who hadn't even heard of Joey O'Brien. Does RTE single out any Irish in their Premiership analysis on Saturday evenings? If they don't, they should. It'd be a start.
Did anyone see Duff's remarks about Lansdowne recently, basically calling it a sh1t hole?
The press here reports on English football like it's our own national league whereas I think the emphasis on English football reporting should at least include highlighting any Irish involvement.
Or maybe even start covering the Eircom League as if it was our national league

I said the "emphasis on English football reporting". It goes without saying how they should cover our own league. :)
