It says on the BBC that he's English. Has he declared for Ireland?

Excuse my laziness. Instead of just typing "Marcos Painter" into Google, as I did before that post, I just typed "Marcos Painter" and "Irish" into it and blam, there's my answer. I got a couple of match reports and that's it.

He's probably a player we'd be wishing to make the break as he's one of the few left back's we have at any level.

Saw him play in the U-21 game against Switzerland, he didn't do anything really wrong, but he seemed to be trying to play the game all by himself, he wasn't moving with the rest of the back 4 and on more than one occasion didn't do what the keeper told him to do (marking, what post to stay on, etc)

Mario Melchiot was asked in a start of season interview who he reckons is the best young player at Birmingham and he said Marcos Painter.
I read that he's a right full by trade. Could be wrong though.

It says on ESPN that he can is a right back but they're wrong. :)
"He can be really proud of his debut.
"He is a Birmingham kid who has given everything that he's got and he will remember this day for the rest of his life.
"He had a great debut, never put a foot wrong. He was competitive, strong and fought his corner against Collins John who is a big, strong powerful boy, but he didn't give him an inch.
"He is a John Terry look-a-like and plays with the same sort of heart. He is a 100 per-center and he has got ability too."

So he's played for the under-21's. Does that mean he is fully declared for Ireland or not?

He's played a competitive U-21 game for an international side, as far as I know, that would tie a player to that country

is there a rule that allows them to change untill they reach the age of 23? lets hope that he simply wants to play for us full stop.

Unless the rules have changed in the past 6 months you can change nationality once before the age of 21. There was a 12 months period a while back where the age limit was 23 or 25, that has expired and is unlikely to be brought back. 21 is more than a fair age.
If I remember correctly somebody tipped Givens off to the kid's eligibility, we need a few more guys like this to fill out our squads.

why would he want to change and if so he is not worth it.

Every Monday I buy The Times as they cover every game and rate every player out of 10. It's a handy way of keeping an eye on the Irish in the PL.
Painter got 5, so I thought, well, at least he didn't have a mare. Then I looked at every other player's rating: his was the highest! The Fulham guys all got 2s and 3s, a rating usually reserved for Ian Harte. :)
PS: I was at that U21 game with Tetsujin and soccerc and I can agree with Tets' assessment.
I read this this morning:
UPSON HAILS PAINTER
By John Curtis, PA Sport
Matthew Upson has hailed homegrown Marcos Painter as ``a natural defender''
after being impressed by the Barclays Premiership debut of the 19-year-old
player.
Painter was given his chance as part of Blues manager Steve Bruce's shake-up
and did not look out of place in Saturday's 1-0 success over Fulham - the club's
first league win at home this season.
Upson appreciates his defensive qualities given that other incumbents of the
number three shirt in Jamie Clapham, Stan Lazaridis and Julian Gray have been
more attack-minded.
He told PA Sport: ``I thought Marcos was exceptional. He showed that he had a
bit of a cool head in tough situations at times and he has got a great attitude
and application.
``I've always known that because I've played with him a few times pre-season
and in training and he has come on. Playing in games like that and gaining
experience is only going to help him.
``His positional sense is good. He used the ball very simply and he is not
scared to put his head or foot in. He has got the ingredients of what it takes
to play in that position.
``He is going to want to sit there and defend and we haven't had a left-back
here who wants to do that ever since I've been at Birmingham.
``We've had players at left-back who want to go forward a lot and get on the
ball a lot. All three of them do that - Stan Lazaridis, Jamie Clapham and Julian
Gray.
``They all want to get forward, and have the ability to do that whereas Marcos
is more of a natural defender which, as a centre-half, is more comforting to
play with.''
Painter, a product of City's Academy, made his senior debut in the Carling Cup
tie with S****horpe earlier this season.
He has played at Under-19 level for the Republic of Ireland and also been part
of their Under-21 squad.
He is nicknamed ``JT'' by his team-mates because of his striking visual
resemblance to Chelsea skipper and England defender John Terry.

According to FM2006 he's a right back. Not saying your wrong as fcuk knows some of their positions are way off, just letting you know.

Does anyone know what his Irish connection is? I know Birmingham's extremely Irish but Marcos Painter isn't exactly Muiris de Puintir.

he could easily have an irish mother or something like that.

He's a central defender and probalby why he looked at sea agaist Swiss in the U21 game where a full back Stephen Kelly was centre half alongside McShane.

John Fitzgerald played alongside McShane, no?
Your point remains of course (on both Painter's position & Kelly not being a centre-half)

Yeah, it was amnesia, Kelly played against Northern Ireland as a centre half, didn't look comfortable in that position.

Birmingham are to offer a new contract to defender Marcos Painter who impressed on his Premiership debut against Fulham last weekend.
Blues boss Steve Bruce confirmed a new deal will be offered to four or five of the club's promising youngsters - including Painter - in the new year.
Academy product Painter has played at centre-half for most of his career but was thrust into the left-back role against Chris Coleman's side and was not overawed.
Bruce said: "With the young lads, we get Christmas out of the way and then in January I try to tell all the young lads here who are getting contracts and those who aren't so they can get fixed up elsewhere.
"We've got Colin Doyle, who is at Millwall on loan. We've got Peter Till who is at S****horpe at loan. We've got Marcos Painter. There are four or five of the young boys who will be offered new contracts.
"We think highly of them, especially Doyle and Painter. We want to keep Painter."
Bruce added: "The left-back position has been something of a curse since I've been here with people like Martin Grainger and Stan Lazaridis injured when playing there.
"I've used 14 people at left-back in four years. Marcos is a bit of a throwback in that he will stand and fight his corner. He will get stuck in. He's tough and resilient. He had an outstanding debut against Fulham.
There have been various times right back to the summer when we have thought about giving Marcos a go but we just thought he needed to learn things but he came in and was excellent."

i read an article about him in the irish post this week. It says in an interview with him that he credits don givens with that fact that he is playing for ireland. Givens is friends with the Birmingham academy staff and they told him of his eligibility. Its also Painters mother who is irish, and not his grandmother as said earlier....although one would assume this has the possibility of making his grandmother irish as well! ;)

Good to see that Painter appears to have taken his chance and that both he and Doyle are highly thought of. It may well be vital for them that Bruce stays as often when a new manager comes in its the youngsters who get dropped for the new signings.

When Birmingham City were being subjected to a brutal defeat at Manchester City six days ago, accusations were levelled about just how much it hurt the current incumbents of the first team shirt.
However, one person who shared the pain as acutely as Birmingham's supporters was Ireland under 19 international, Marcos Painter.
The 19-year-old was making only his second Premier-ship appearance in a Blues shirt and, following the accolades he received in the victory over Fulham, he learned about the harsh realities of Premiership life.
Nevertheless, Painter could be exempted from criticism after the Eastlands debacle as he clearly strained every last sinew in order to try and rescue a lost cause.
And there is no danger of Painter losing the common touch, despite rubbing shoulders with millionaires during his Premiership initiation.
