I'm thinking of making a fanzine this season. Do you
think its a good idea, will there be enough people willling
to buy it. how many programmes do they sell every game?
would terryland/united have a problem will the sales of
a fanzine? It would prob be better if it was free i.e with
loads of ads. i'm just at the design stage now

I think that there would be a market for a good quality independent publication. Fanzines are normally sold outside the ground - can't see there being a problem with them being sold at the turnstile area.

Definitely go with it! It's good craic, and there's a small bit of money to be had too. STIG sells to about 4-5% of people at a game - so given our crowds and yours are about the same, that'd be about at 25-30 copies a game. Doesn't sound much, but at a quid a copy over a season, that's E500.

GalwayFrancis

how many do ye print? what does it cost to make each fanzine?

We print about 25-30. Not being smart! Just that after five years, you get a feeling for how many you're going to sell. Add an extra five or six for the contributors I suppose. The bigger games, we might do 80. The fanzine covers two games, so we print less for the second game obviously as many of the regulars will have a copy already.

We took advantage of the generous people in UCD who left printers and computers lying around to aid students' studying, so printing is by and large free. I know the Drogheda one (don't know if it's still going) bought paper, ink and a small printer and printed theirs off on that. It'd cost about 5p per A4 page or so.

At the start - then it was done for free by someone who got his staff to print it out :D

Will all the money made from sales of the fanzine go to the club or just a certain percentage of it?.

Patrick Dunne

rarely, if ever, go to the "parent" club. They are usually used to cover production costs, buy flags etc. In some cases a fanzine may sponsor a player.

If you're interested, this months When Saturday Comes, the definite English football fans journal has some great pieces about the heyday of football fanzines. There are a number of very useful articles that may be of interest. Well worth purchasing from O'Briens.

I remember those glory days of the fanzine and as a GUFC fanatic at the time used to collect them all. O'Briens was great for that kind of stuff. Still have a full set of Standing Room Only (SRO) as well as various Rovers, Bohs, Cork City and others. I guess the arrival of the internet killed them off. SRO wasn't far off the best in terms of content either...

Portadown's Better Red the Dead is the only one on this island that has kept going since the glory days of fanzines as far as I know.
