Just Caught a bit of that TV programme last night about the young people who were involved in Satanism linked with heavy metal music. The prog was concentrated in Italy & Sweden (I think).A lot of young people ended up either dead or in jail.

Is there any interest in this type of music/scene here?.

Always has been, always will be. I never bothered with death metal, thought it was OTT metal for OTT idiots, but I listened to plenty of Slayer and Celtic Frost in my day, and liked it. Still like it in fact, although I rarely listen to it. The satanism link is brought up again and again, usually by equivalent nutjobs from the religious right. Kids experiment and metal talks about satan, so of course there's a connection. There's also a connection between catholicism and mass murder. I know one which has killed more people.

yep theres a sizeable interest in it throughout the country. bands like deicide and slayer (went to see them in the sfx) have played in dublin on numerous occassions. plenty of irish death metal bands too including one (whos name escapes me but i think theyre from cork) who rolled a pigs head into the crowd at a gig in galway.

check out www.metalireland.com for more.

by the way yer man glen benton (from deicide) who has the inverted cross branded on his forehead. he was supposed to kill himself the same date jesus died at the same age in a big satanic ritual type thing and he never did (too busy counting the dollars!!!)...i liked this stuff when i was younger (more impressionable!) but i just kinda laugh at it now....all the stupid pulling of "mean/satanic" faces and devil horn signs etc.

A bit too heavy and extreme for me. Could never understand why they screamed/groaned into the mic making it impossible to understand any lyrics.

Wasnt really to into death metal over the years, groups like cannibal corpse and napalam death just didnt do it for me. Saw the show last night usual stuff, music makes teens go cerazy etc. Quite enjoy listening to some of the melodic black/death metal groups coming out of finland, some great music coming out of that country the last few years.

Celtic Frost

they are from cork arent they? they are fairly old as well, they've been aroudn a while i mean.

the links between death metal and satanism is a load of cac. those actually into death/black/doom metal never have any interest in satanism, and that is a fact. its just stupid programmes like this that create a link.

however there is an exception to this, emperor would be black metal and the lead singer was in jail for a while. but its just nut jobs into satanism that sometimes listen to this type of music that create a link or so it appears to the outside world.

cannibal corpse have some good songs though, check out zero the hero, six feet under arent bad either, insect is a good song of theirs.

would be more inclined to black metal as the vocals arent as heavy/deep. agalloch are a band from maine, well worth checking out. the melancholy spirit is a great song, its got everything about 11 instruments in total. \m/

Check out Wintersun really good group. The old bassist from mayhem was a pure nutjob as well, burnt down the old chursch and killed his bandmate. He still is recording some albums from jail under the name of Burzum.

As you can see from the replies 12th Man -there's few enough on here who'll be sacrificing puppies in the graveyard on the way home after work.

I only caught the end of the programme myself and, while I sympathise with the parents of that murdered teen who were trying to sue Slayer, I would guess they are barking up the wrong tree in their search for answers, someone to blame and a bit of closure.

The programme seemed to be identifying extreme music as a direct cause -an instruction almost - to these kids commiting violent crime. I think that's attacking a symtom rather than an underlying cause and I don't think it's credible.

If death metal, dark metal, doom metal or any other genre in some way "glorify" violence -then they're only a small snapshot of the arts, entertainment and media that do likewise. There's an element of "what-about-ery" in that I acknowledge but why attack a metal act and not Pokemon, video games, Buffy or indeed education systems that offer too little by way of physical eduction and where it is provided concentrates on team sports when it's been known for years that only 1 in 10 people are actually suited to team sports?

There's a mouthful in there I know (and I could keep going) but I guess I'm saying the problem is much broader and easy targets won't bring about solutions.

BTW -Deicide are a bunch of pussys ...Glen Benton balling his shopping list into a microphone over some of the most acme metal you'll ever come across.

Is it not more of the case that some people who listen to black metal are evil sh!ts, just the same as some who listen to rap or punk rock or Gary Glitters greatest hits are?

Big into it when I was younger (16 or so). Did all the satanic sh1t also, but never killed anyone !! Still have all my Deicide, slayer, cannibal corpse ...etc. stuff but havent listened to any of it for years now. Chilled out now and enjoy S.O.A.D. and what not.
