Legendary League of Ireland manager Turlough O’Connor has been linked with the vacant manager’s job at Athlone Town.
O’Connor guided the midlanders to two league crowns and a League Cup success in the space of three seasons in the early 1980s.
They also lifted the League Cup on successive occasions during that golden era for the club – but the First Division title in 1988 is their only silverware since then.
Athlone finished bottom of the First Division table in the season just ended, with manager John Gill resigning after the final game of the season.
But the appointment of O’Connor, predicted by the Irish Independent on Wednesday morning, would go a long way towards casting off the disappointment of 2005.
The paper claims that O’Connor – who also won league titles with Dundalk in 1989 and 1991 – will be unveiled alongside his brother Michael.
