Police and local officials across Japan are gearing up for the hooligans. The most novel idea so far is a Spiderman-style net gun now being studied by police in Sapporo, where England face Argentina, and Germany and Italy also have games.
"It was obvious to us right away that this could be a useful weapon in riots," says Masatsugu Ogi of the World Cup Security Division in the local police force. "Of course, martial arts are also an important part of our training, but thinking of the Europeans' size and power, the nets might be more effective."
