SLIGO Rovers manager Sean Connor has said that Liam Burns is likely to commit to his team for next season’s Premier Division campaign.
Speaking after Saturday’s 2-1 reversal at Kilkenny, Rovers’ last game of the year, Connor said: “We are very close to agreeing a deal for Liam [Burns] to stay at the club so that he can stay and train with us every day next year, which will make him an even better player.”
Burns’s partnership in the centre of defence with captain Michael McNamara is the cornerstone on which Rovers’ success was built this season and between their efforts and the hugely impressive performances of goalkeeper John O’Hara, Rovers conceded just 27 goals in 36 games this season, the best record in the First Division.
Furthermore, Rovers have lost just five times on their way to the First Division title, including Saturday’s meaningless encounter.
Connor was quick to praise Burns’ contribution: “We have a presentation tonight [Saturday] with the players and Liam Burns was the ‘Manager’s Player of the Year’. I think he has been magnificent all year and I think he has been a top pro.”
