'yo-yo' clubs... ucd
Jeez, we've only been relegated twice ever. There must be a lot of yo-yo clubs so!

Love them or hate them, the Premier Division needs Rovers just as much as the hoops need the Premier Division. They are the biggest and most successful name in Irish Soccer and probably always will be. I would love to see Rovers properly establish themselves in the huge catchment area that is Tallaght as there is potentially a huge fanbase there and this can only be good for Rovers and the Eircom League in the long run. A club like Dublin City will contribute nothing to the Premier Division. We need the top teams in the top division and Rovers fit the bill!

Wouldn't agree with that, who else could we laugh at?

May their stay in the First Division be a long and unpleasant one!

It's not about voting, it's about clubs failing to get a licence. If any significant amount of clubs fail in their licence application, the whole process will be deemed null and void and the 2 divisions merged into 1.

KOH

Thing is will that happen? What's the bets that all clubs will again be given licences like last year? For 2007 they are really pushing for their holy grail: the Genesis Report.

That's the rumour going round. Either everyone gets a provisional licence and we have a 22 team league or (more likely) they kick it into touch citing Genesis.

Fair play for getting them down. Maybe they could be questioned as to why the fans view was largely absent from their report. While I would welcome the 10 team premier bringing in more teams is farcical.

Im all for having less Dublin clubs in the Premier but would hate to see Rovers go down. Much rather see a club like Pats or UCD go down.

Rovers are the team we all love to hate and they are the only fans who bring decent numbers to the Cross

Rubbish

A club like Dublin City will contribute nothing to the Premier Division. We need the top teams in the top division and Rovers fit the bill!

So leave them there if they win the playoff games, otherwise they have no right to play in the premier. Best team stays/goes up CMon City.

I know this isn't coming from a Rovers supporter but it is typical of the nonsense heard from them down the years and why I really don't like Rovers. The attitude "Where would the league of Ireland be without Shamrock Rovers?". This ridiculous view that just because a team was successful years ago that they have moreof an entitlement to be in the premier division. Such cr@p. What matters is now - not what you won in the 1970s.

Taking this argument to its logical conclusion maybe we should just allow Rovers into the CL each year because they have a great history.

But where would it be? Would you like to play us in Rathbane or CHF? Simple question. I know what your money men would say.

BTW we only won 2 trophies in the 70s! But there is no view that because we were successful years ago that we have an entitlement to be in the premier. Not one fan or the trustees thinks like that. That is plain stupid and a childish reason why you dont like Rovers.

If CHF beat us in the play off we will accept it and wont bitch, moan, whinge and whine like they did last year when we ended up 13 points ahead of them.

Thanks for making my point for me.

Would you like to play us in Rathbane or CHF? Simple question. I know what your money men would say.

Its irrelevant. Our money men would love to play Manchester United as well but that ain't going to happen. Your argument is an argument for Dublin Dons. We'd love to playing Shels, Cork City and Derry but football is based on the idea of the best team plays in teh premier - not the best supported or the one with greatest history. And I would like to play Rovers in Rathbane next season and I think we will too. But doesn't this throw the argument that the premier division needs Rovers out the window? If Rovers will bring lots of fans and money to the teams they play really isn't a case that eL needs Rovers in the First Division? :ball:

totally different situation, you can't compare the two. If we get to the play-off's and you beat us, then thats fair enough with me, but don't compare last year.

Thanks for missing the point. Can you take away your hatred for Rovers and see this through? If not I'm not going to comment further.

I was, at that time, 100% against the dons so that is tosh. Obviously you didnt read what I posted so here it is again: But there is no view that because we were successful years ago that we have an entitlement to be in the premier. Not one fan or the trustees thinks like that. I also said that if CHF beat us no arguments.

The premier needs us because we ALWAYS bring a decent crowd everywhere. Also the fact that we are in town, no matter how bad we are, brings more bodies through the gate and that is good for the premier.

Democracy rules. Put up a poll on it and we'll see the answers. The premier would be poorer if we're not in it.

Lastly the fewer Dublin teams in the premier is old. Every capital city has more clubs attached to it. CHF shouldn't be in the league though but have no problems with there being 5 capital teams out of 22.

But if we take the eL as a whole how would the eL most benefit. The first division suffers from poor crowds. Rovers in teh first would improve crowds there and would probably have a bigger impact than having them in the premier. So he premier (clubs) would benefit financially from having Rovers in it. But the first division (clubs) would benefit relatively more from having Rovers in the first. So overall, from the eL's perspective it is better to have Rovers in the First. I know that nobody at Rovers believes that because they were successful years ago that we have an entitlement to be in the premier. However, I do believe that Rovers have an over-inflated view of their importance to the league.

Of course in football democracy doesn't rule. What rules are results so even if every fan in Ireland agreed that Rovers should be in the premier that doesn't mean it will or should happen.

I could care less how many Dublin clubs are in the premier. geography is as bad as democracy as a basis for membership of the top division.

My feelings on this are affected as well by the preoccupation with the premier division by the 'larger' clubs and the league in general. In teh past Rovers fans have been as dismissive as others ofthe first division - now they can't be. :ball:

There seems to be a perception around here that us Rovers fans are kicking up a fuss about the idea that we have to contest a play-off to stay in the Premier Division. At what point have any of us moaned that we are 'too good to go down' or that 'the Premier Division needs us'. Christ, you don't even hear us complaining and making excuses about the eight point deduction. No doubt if there was another club in our position you'd hear plenty of excuses relating to that.

It remains to be seen if we go down. Personally I believe we will do enough to see off the challange of either CHF or Cobh, but if not we will take our medicine, just like Harps, and any other team that has gone this way in the past. At no point has the arrogance that so many seem to be talking about crept into any discussion about our potential relegation. It stinks being here, of course, but we'll grin and bear it, and over come whatever comes our way.

My point about the Dublin clubs was addressed to cuanad.

Eh, have a look at today's papers. Do a word count and you'll see that Rovers are in the news more than Derry or Cork on the day of the title decider. it's not just us that has "an over-inflated view of their importance to the league."

The reality is that we are the most famous club in the league - despite the fact that we're utter rubbish at the minute and have been for a long time.

RTÉ are even considering showing the play-off next Friday if Tuesday's result is close. No other club would be shown in a relegation play-off. And that, as some like to say, is FACT.

Want Hoops to go down... obviously as a a Viking fan, have no other way for my team to get into the top-flight again unless we send Rovers down. But I also want em to come straight back up (unless we have to do a play-off with em again!) They need a taste of 1st Division... should do em good & might buck em on the straight & narrow again.

I have to say i want Rovers to stay up...but on saying that it might be better for there future if they go down and start all over again as mentioned by Jason Colwell in the sun newspaper Monday...obviousy Rovers fans wont think that way...the way they are going at the moment though they could be even weaker next season on the field when they are trying to build the club up financially so for them to go down might not be that bad...

I appreciate the argument that Rovers offer much more to the league than CHF but if they go down they deserve it.

I just hope that they don't struggle to exist. There should be a 'yes' option.

i can see the oppoiste sides of da argument but tbh i think it is feasibly better for rovers to go down-allow them to rebuild the club from scratch,

it did shels no problem at all in the 80s when they got relegated and see where they are now! shels were struggling for 20 years before they got relegated they were also homeless at that time

to sum it up it did them no harm at all.
