Despite being continually put down as a poor side, the Swiss kick above their weight and beat Turkey 2-0. Not sure we would have been able to conjure a similar result.

Unfortunately true, I wouldn't see us beating Turkey at all. Fecking Swiss though, I am still hoping for a Turkish come back :o

I watched the T&T-Bahrain game and it was one of the worst games I have ever seen. Really bad. Unless the winner gets their act together, we will see them lose something like 5-0 in their games next June.

I love to see Australia make it. They had awful luck in the play-offs over the years.

I know what you're saying Rebel Boy.
Poor feckers are always loseing in the play-offs and have been threatening to leave their federation if they don't get an automatic spot for it.
But maybe the question might be asked
Are they just not good enough?

Aren't they going to Asia from the next campaign? They're better than Trinidad & Tobago and Bahrain anyway. They'd qualify from Asia regularly, I'd say.

They are leaving to play in the Asia qualifiers from now on. They should qualify every time.

I've never liked Austrailia ever since they beat up that island team 33-0 or something during the last qualifyiers. There was no need to score any more once they reached 10. Plus they're complaining all the time about how Oceania, otherwise known as Austrailia should get 1 whole spot. Maybe they should prove themselves first by beating the 5th place team from SA.

On the contrary - I think a Tyrone football manager once said that if you were 20 points better than a team, you should go out and beat them by 20 points. Professional attitude and all that. Jack Charlton famously blamed the 3-1 defeat by Spain in 1993 on telling his players to ease up when 2-0 up against Lithuania in the previous match. There's no point easing up. It's unfortunate the geographical area they're in though - don't really get the chance to test themselves against semi-decent sides and then suddenly they're up against two-time world champions.

Sepp "Devil" Blatter (I hate that man) promised OFC direct qualification. Then once he was re-elected he didn't dare to push through the idea. Scandal.

I think in a worldwide sport and tournament, Oceania does deserve a direct spot. But I have a serious insularia (= obsession for little remote islands) so maybe that's why I find Oceanian football so fascinating. I'd watch Cook Islands vs Tonga anytime over Brazil vs Argentina.

Anyway, Australia is out of the OFC. They feel to good for the small isles. Hopefully they never ever qualify for a WC and get beaten by Japan and China and Iran with some scores that remind them of their own results in Oceania. And hopefully why they lick their wounds, New Zealand (or even better: Solomon Islands or Vanuatu) qualify for the WC 2010.

The Aussies did something unacceptable IMO, looking down on more amateuristic teams is the worst attitude a team can have. I dropped all my soccer sympathies for them. I don't like Uruguay specially (don't dislike them as well) but much rather Uruguay than those Australian ego's.
