Romario is the most significant absence in Brazil's World Cup squad of 23 players. There has been a national campaign, backed by Pele and President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, to recall the 36-year-old.

The squad includes seven players from Brazil's 1998 World Cup squad. They include starters Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Emerson, along with wingers Cafu and Roberto Carlos. There is no place for Mario Jardel of Sporting Lisbon.


Goalkeepers: Marcos (Palmeiras), Dida (Corinthians), Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo).

Defenders: Cafu (Roma), Belletti (Sao Paulo), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid), Junior (Parma), Roque Junior (AC Milan), Anderson Polga (Gremio), Lucio (Bayer Leverkusen), Edmilson (Lyon).

Midfielders: Emerson (Roma), Gilberto Silva (Atletico-MG), Kleberson (Atletico-PR), Vampeta (Corinthians), Juninho Paulista (Flamengo) Kaka (Sao Paulo), Ronaldinho (Paris St Germain), Rivaldo (Barcelona).

Forwards: Edilson (Cruzeiro), Luizao (Gremio), Denilson (Real Betis), Ronaldo (Inter Milan).
