Really, are you that shocked? They are useless this season.Oh yeah, losing one out of nine is useless alright:rolleyes:. You only think they're useless because Chelski are doing brilliant this season;). Plus, it's Middlesbrough they're playing so yes, I am shocked:D

I was at Old Trafford last weekend and they were complete and utter cac. No effort from the players at all. Most of them didn't seem to know what they were at. They do not have the squad depth that they once had and the team they have at present is nothing on the Schmiechel, Parker, Bruce, Palister, Irwin, Kanchelskis, Ince, Keane, Giggs, Hughes and Cantona team of the mid-90's or the team that won the treble in '99. There seems to be a lack of desire to win and a lack of loyalty to the club that was there in the past. Rio still get his £120,000 a week no matter what the score. ;)

That's just my opinion obviously maybe I am just being too critical or I expect too much. :)

0-3 at half time and still the same with 20 minutes to go. Miller didn't make it into the squad even. They are a shambles in the middle .. if Miller was ever to make his name for United now would be the time. .. but if he can't even get into the squad. ..

The team they put out is as good as they have got at present.

Man Utd: Van der Sar, Bardsley (Richardson 31), Ferdinand (Brown 87), O'Shea, Silvestre, Fletcher, Smith, Scholes, Park (Ronaldo 60), Rooney, van Nistelrooy.
Subs Not Used: Howard, Rossi.

I have been saying for several years that Ferdinand is the most overrated play in EPL and we all know about O'Shea. No wonder they are leaking goals.

They will be lucky to finish in top 5.

Rio Ferdinand is in danger of being dropped for Manchester United's midweek Champions League trip to Lille following his personal horror show here at the Riverside Stadium.

Ferdinand could be one of several changes Sir Alex Ferguson makes to his side following a 4-1 defeat against Middlesbrough, one of United's worst in the Premier League.

The England international had a nightmare as Middlesbrough ran riot to put their recent poor form behind them in spectacular fashion.

He almost gifted Gaizka Mendieta a goal with some poor control on 16 minutes, was outfoxed by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for Boro's second and was then beaten by Yakubu for the home side's fourth.

Former West Ham and Leeds centre-back Ferdinand, who has already lost his place in Sven-Goran Eriksson's England side, was eventually hauled off close to the end of this one-sided encounter and faces a battle to keep his place in Ferguson's starting line-up for Wednesday's clash in France.

Defeat left United an all but unbridgeable 13 points behind leaders and reigning champions Chelsea, their next Premiership opponents.

"It was a shocking performance," said Ferguson.

"It was a bad start and we never recovered. I'm also unimpressed by the fact we lost three terrible goals.

"At the start of a match you want to get tight in midfield but the lad (Mendieta) had a free shot from 25 yards."

The veteran Scottish manager is renowned for his infamous 'hair-dryer' rants at players after a defeat but he insisted his feelings were beside the point. "It doesn't matter if I am angry, the players should be angry with a performance like that."

United will have to bounce back quickly if they are to test Lille following their uninspiring goalless draw against the French side at Old Trafford.

"The beauty of football is that there is always a next match," Ferguson added. "But our opponents will be buoyed by this result and they'll take confidence from it."

Meanwhile the veteran Scottish manager downplayed talk that the Chelsea game was an expecially must-win' match.

"Today was a must-win game. You get three points for beating Middlesbrough just like Chelsea.

"Their (Chelsea's) form has been outstanding and the rest of us are hoping they slip up."

Mendieta broke the deadlock inside the second minute with a thumping 30 yard drive that slipped through United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar's grasp.

It went from bad to worse for the visitors when Hasselbaink latched onto a diagonal ball from Mendieta before beating Ferdinand and shooting past Van der Sar to double Boro's lead.

Substitute Kieran Richardson hauled down Stuart Parnaby to concede a penalty on the stroke of half time which Yakubu duly converted.

United never threatened a comeback after the break despite the efforts of Wayne Rooney and Mendieta then scored Boro's in the 78th minute.

Substitute Cristiano Ronaldo headed in Paul Scholes's stoppage-time corner for United's 1,000th Premiership goal but it was scant consolation.

Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren, formerly Ferguson's Old Trafford deputy, hailed his side's outstanding display.

But, after enjoying a glass of red wine with his mentor, he refused to rule United out of the title race.

"We had a drink after the game. He knows football and he knows there are ups and downs like this," McClaren said.

"He accepted the result like a true gent. You get times like these but he will move on and come back strong again.

"Nobody likes losing games but I thought our football was terrific and so was the way we controlled the game.

"We looked well balanced and that was Gaizka Mendieta back to his best. I'm delighted for him because he deserves it considering how hard he's worked to get back over the last 12 months."
