Well Pete, what does the phrase "convenience stores" mean to you???
I know but how many is enough? Even O'Connell Street is now plagued by them. I think should be possibly be planning restrictions when too many on certain streets already.

As long as people are willing to buy the franchise, it will continue to grow I'm afraid!

Super Macs x 1
Eddie Rockets x 1
Abrekebabra X 1

Thats eight Fast foods not including Ordinary restaurants Chinese etc.

See that's what I'm on about. Down here, we have a McDonalds and a KFC. Even in Cork on the street, Something Parade, I can't remember the name they never had that many fast food places.

i heard that in connection with the regeneration of o'connell st,(which actually is starting to look well) when leases come up for renewal, id imagine the likes of them gaudy fast-food places will be forced out.hopefully.
burger king-gone very tasteless.noticed in spain that they dont give salt out with fast food.that a law anyone know?
mcdonalds-mouldy.with the odd exception-mcchicken premiere, cheeseburgers and milkshakes
abrakebabra-i love that stuff.but athena zaytoon and antalya are much better for good quality kebabs
supermacs-good chips, good range of food, but burgers arent great
eddie rockets-glorified macdonalds.not worth the cash.
beshoffs-one of the triumvirate of over-rated chippers in dublin-along with harry ramsdens and gypo burdocks. fusciardi is a better chipper on marlborough st.and theres another better chipper on marlborough st too, just next door to the entrance to the firestone.

oh yeah, as for spar centra etc. i never realise how grateful for them i can be unitl i go abroad and end up eating them poxy butter-less bocadillos with fatty cold ham. spar/centra are great for rolls.so what if your convenience store is a spar/centra or whatever. theyre merely franchises, but are still run as local shops even if the centra logo is bigger than the mchughs/kennedys owners logo etc

Isn't there a Fish and Chipper just opposite Burger King near the Spire?

Hey Sligoman,
Supermac food is decent enough but it couldnt hold a candle to a Big 4 Special!!

Do Beshoffs have a shop near there?
Havent been in Dublin in ages, apart from the airport!, so I cant remember, but
there used to be a fella sitting somewhere along O'Connell St with an advertising
sign pointing to somewhere along there

Beshoffs:mad: , a few years back on Good Friday I was getting the bus home to Donegal from O’Connell Street and went in for something to eat, they had almost doubled the price of fish & chips, and even at that they gave out smaller portions fookers never set foot in their again:mad: .
(Didn’t realise this before anyone asks why did I eat there, as I had paid for the food in advance and was a bit hung over at the time as well)

Hey Sligoman,
Supermac food is decent enough but it couldnt hold a candle to a Big 4 Special!!Well yeah but because there's a 4 lanterns here then you kinda get a bit fed up of them after a while. That's why supermacs is a nice change, suppose if that came too then I'd get fed up of that eventually:o :D

To me it means that it stayes open after 9pm. Why oh why do shops in Dublin close so early? There is only one offie next to UCD and that closes around 9:30. Crazy!

The risk of staff being attacked because of bogeys attempting to rob the place I would imagine.

Always found the chipper on Parnell Street nicer too, but then have to factor in the less distance walked too.
As for Spars/Centra's, just remember these are the so called independents that the groceries order is protecting. For Spar and Centra read RG Data.

Exactly, the old locally run corner shop is very rare now.
Centra (Musgraves) have bigger purchasing power & market share than Dunnes stores.

Good point. The deli's in those places are life savers. You only realise how handy they are when you are abroad.

Centra (Musgraves) have bigger purchasing power & market share than Dunnes stores.Super Valu would count for a lot of that too, especially since they took over Roches' groceries. Interesting stat though, where'd you get it pete?

It was in the Business Post the other week. Musgraves own both the Super Valu and Centra marques. Big, big players. as someone else pointed out these are the so-called independents that the Groceries Order protects.

Musgraves own both the Super Valu and Centra marques.I used to work for a company that supplied them so I'm aware of the intracacies. Used to be you could name a town anywhere in Ireland and I could tell you if there was a Super Valu, Centra or Spar there. Rubbish party trick. :)
Is Londis still about or did they kill them off? What about Pettitts in the East?
EDIT: And while I think of it, wasn't there talk a while back of a British firm taking over the Roches section of Super Valu's operations?

yea you can't beat the deli in centra.especially the one on bandon road near ucc which has everything.it stays open till 10 or 11 as well.why do dublin joints shut up shop so early?surely there is a big market for shopping up 10 and 11?

They don't, my local Spar and Centra are both 24 hour and Super Valu opens till 11. Dublin is full of 24 hour conveniance stores.

I see RGDATA aka Musgraves are so bothered about the Groceries Order going that they're launching a new chain. (It was on Morning Ireland, looking for a link now). Think it says a lot about the fight to keep it in place

A piece of useless/useful info ... Centra and SuperValu have different pricing matrices, and SuperValu is always cheaper, and Centras in built up urban areas are always on the high matrix.
