Absolute cracker.
Wasn't aware the lad is Irish until I heard him being interviewed after the match. Anybody have any details on him? One for the future?

Capped in a friendly against Greece in 2000. Was rubbish. Still, no harm in trying him again. Kilbane had a woeful debut, was dropped for two years and now look at him.:) Mahon also had a spell in Portugal with Benfica in the Souness era. He's also nothing to the UCD Alan Mahon, although I have seen some papers make that mistake!

yeah poor mahon had one of the worst debuts imaginable-even had a fresh air cross on the right wing if memory serves. think he played for blackburn for a while and kept duff out of the team. great strike-pity he's left footed!

Sporting Lisbon, that's right - not Benfica. Steve Harkness and Michael Thomas were teammates there! I think Babb got some award - Best Foreign Player in the league?

He's still woeful.
I don't think Mahon will cut it. He's been around for a while now and hasn't achieved much. He must be mind twenties by now, I don't see him as a good prospect at all.

Sure he's only playing regular Premiership football for a team who've won six out of nine games. How many of our players can we say that about?! I'd like to see him in a couple of friendlies before the next Euros. Same with Mark Kennedy, incidentally.

He hasn't played that regularly (4 starts out of 9). He only played on Saturday because McCullogh was injured. He's not first choice there.

doubt they would be able to get duffer out of the team!

IMO he's just to inconsistent. He scored several crackers for Wigan last season too but has played poorly more often than not. He also scored the odd decent goal for Blackburn but was inconsistent there too. However O'Shea is consistently poor :p so maybe we could try convert him into a LB. He's exactly the type of player I have been advocating the return of the Ireland B team for.

I always felt he shafted Tranmere. Was ment to make a move for about £3M to some premiership team, but instead did a 'Bosman transfer' to Portugal. I dont think he plaed a full season before he was loaned out to Blackburn and stayed there for some time. Then went on loan to Ipswich ?, and then moved to Wigan.
There has been talk that he was meant to go out on loan from Wigan, with Ipswich his most likely destination.
What is it with Tranmere and Irish players. Thornton and Murphy played there and moved away when there contracts expired and Tranmere only received nominal amounts for them.
Three players who could have made some money for Tranmere.
I've followed his career closely as he went to the same school as me (year ahead) he's definitely oat a premiership level and was one of Wigan's better players last year. Ironically it was the signing of Kavanagh that reduced his imput. Not sure he'd bring much to the international squad but would never ever lack effort
Oh yeah and he's a Pats fan :)

I think he's about 26 now. Jewell said about two weeks ago he was going nowhere when Joe Royle wanted him back at Ipswich. I've seen him play a couple of time. He's one of those where you don't quite know where to play him. He's not quite a midfielder not quite a wide player.
He grew up a Neighbour to a relative of mine in Rialto and is supposed to be a really nice guy, for what that's worth.

i think babbs award was actually - best foreign defender!!
narrows it down a little bit!! but still let him have his moment of glory!!!

I'm pretty sure Kavanagh was brought in while Mahon was injured, but even when he came back he was finding first team football hard to come by. Wigan were rampant at that stage, and Jewell was unlikely to change a winning side.

I'm not sure if you're talking about this season but Kav was injured for the first 2 games. As soon as he was fit he was in the team instead of Mahon. Mahon is a bit-part player at Wigan. Hopefully his performance on Saturday will keep him in the team though.

Sorry, could have been a bit clearer. I meant that Wigan bought Kav while Mahon was injured last season, and went straight into the first team.
