If draws count, UCD 0-0 Everton in 1984. Everton won the English league and European Cup Winners' Cup that season.

Well that certainly upset me :D :D .

Pats 3 Ghent 1 (Lost on away goals after 2-0 defeat away)
Pats 1 Rijeka 0 (Won on away goals after 3-2 defeat away.)

Going back to the 60's, didn't Rovers run Bayern Munich (Including Beckenbauer and Mueller) very close. Away goals or a single late goal defeat I think. Probably more one of those famous "Moral Victories" than an actual upset.

Drumcondra beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in 1963 in the home leg.

Rovers beat Schalke04 in 1970 2-1 in their home leg.

Rovers complete European record can be found here:

http://www.shamrockrovers.ie/europeanResults.html

We got some credible results in the '50s and '60s, but, with the exception of beating Odra, bugger all since.

First Leg -Shamrock Rovers 1 Bayern Munich 1
Second Leg -Bayern Munich 3 Shamrock Rovers 2

That's the result I was talking about. I thnk Bayern's winner was very late in that game.

That's the result I was talking about. I thnk Bayern's winner was very late in that game.

Gerd Muller scored with seven minutes to go to put Bayern through. If it had stayed at 2-2, Rovers would have gone through on away goals.

All Rovers' European results are those sort of nearly stories. For example, Rovers went 2-0 up in Valencia the year after Valencia had won the FAIRS Cup (UEFA Cup as it's now known), but Valencia pulled it back and beat us in Dublin to go through. We also narrowly lost 3-2 to the Busby Babes in Manchester, but we'd lost the first leg 6-0 so that didn't really matter.

The Odra result in 2003 was very good considering a Polish side had knocked (?) Man City out of Europe the year before.

Our best ever result against a foreign side wasn't in European competition but is still worth a mention. Chelsea won the English league in 1955 and their full strength side came to Dublin but Rovers beat them 3-2. Unfortunately it was a meaningless friendly, but still an amazing result.

Anyway, that's enough of me being Stato for one day.

Oh, and Bayern Munich won the Cup Winners Cup that year. Beat Glasgow Rangers in the final, if I'm not mistaken.

NY Hoop

Rovers had already lost 1-0 at Dalymount before the trip to Valencia. The Odra result was the best Irish result IMO and Man City with a squad worth £60m went out on away goals to another Polish side months later:D
