i dont know what to make of the score line.. i posted in the other thread what i thought. if the swiss win and we beat them we top the group so should we be hoping for that to happen ?

if things stay the same
israel still ahve a chance of qualifying
as much as i am not fan of the swiss
i would prefer them than israel to get to playoff

Both a poor second for me Concanta. Right now I'd take Ireland for that play-off place. :D

well in livescore they won 2-1

Poor Student
08/10/2005, 8:37 PM
Indeed. Don't even worry, suffice as to say anything aside from a win is useless.

thejollyrodger

the only thing is where we end up 1st or 2nd. a win and were second no matter what. 1 or 3 points for the swiss tonight changes what they have to get next wednesday. they coming for a draw and them coming for a win is totally different for us.

what does the table look like now ??

sligoman

The Swiss/France game is over now, 1-1 final score

Marked Man
08/10/2005, 8:40 PM
Yes, but the Faroes got their goal after the Israeli's got theirs. Final score in the other game is 1-1

i reckon now it looks like a draw would be good enough for the swiss on wednesday cuz they wud finish ahead of israel on head to head. Still means we hav 2 win, but changes the whole swiss mentality. a french win would have meant that the swiss would hav 2 win aswell as us making it a more open game, easier for us to win. because they drew tonight now it means that they can play for a draw, and i reckon theyd be a hard enough team 2 break down. i can see a frustrating nil nil on wednesday. Also, theyl be confident after 2nites result.
Come on the boys!!!!

thejollyrodger

its 2-1 alright. two goals from either side in the 90th minute.

can this thread be merged ?

so we can still win the group?

thejollyrodger
08/10/2005, 8:44 PM
The swiss defence tonight was very resolute alright. I cant see them capulating very easily. It will really take something special from Ireland to win. I cant see ireland losing but the swiss only need a draw and they will be playing for the counter attack.

The 1-1 draw tonight is the worst result IMO.

yablazer
08/10/2005, 8:47 PM
agree with u rodge. cud see us possibly winning an open game with the swiss, but itl be a lot harder 2 beat a swiss team who only need a draw

Win and we're second. If Cyprus somehow pull off a shocker and hold France to a draw, we'd top the group.

Colbert Report

Israel are not eliminated. If we were to beat the Swiss and Cyprus were to beat France, Israel would come in second and Ireland first.

I know it's a one in a million shot, but Israel would have settled for it when the draw was made.

Given the way the group has gone a draw was the most likely result as it will be on Wednesday. Our task is now harder but we certainly won't be going into the game over-confident, which is a relief

so we can still win the group?

Yes, if we beat the Swiss and France don't beat Cyprus we will actually
win the group!! If we win and France win we are second.
Anything else and it's Auf Wiedersehen Deutschland.

Colbert Report

I think from a Swiss perspective, it's better to sit back and settle for a draw and second place rather than pushing up and risking losing out altogether.

Interesting though......I doubt the French will beat Cyprus by more than three.

I'll second that totalfootball sitting back for 90 minnutes is likely to get you
what you deserve, ie nothing. We will get a goal.

Why will the Swiss sit back and settle for a draw. Their record against us in the last three games and our current form must give them the belief they can beat us.

We do not look like we can beat our way out of a paper bag.

We had one good (great) player tonight - Shay Given - The rest were dire.

I'm very very pessimistic about Wedneday now............:(

Surely Switzerland like us can only win the group if France slip up to Cyrpus, as France would win a head to head if they finish equal on points based on the away goal (or am I wrong?).

On that basis Switzerland could adopt a cautious approach which will make them hard to break down, but on the other hand a dangerous way to play.

How did the Swiss play last night? Do they look dangerous?

Basically win or bust on wednesday night.

I would rather see Ireland lose to Switzerland than draw. Never mind the seedings for Euro 2008. I dont want to see Israel proceed any futher.

09/10/2005, 6:01 PM
what about a draw. i remember benyaoun on the telly hoping for a draw against ireland and switzerland.. maybe that was for another game.

well, i think the french should manage to turn over the cyprus at home. unless they are in great spirits after playing us

If we draw with the Swiss, they would be level on 18 points with Israel.
How do permutations work then, 2-2 in Israel, 1-1 in Switzerland
Do the Swiss go through cos they scored more goals in Israel?

and a superior overall goal difference.
Thanks, is this inclusive of all games?
Were there some queries of minnows being eliminated for GD calculations?

so the only way of knowing the rules is to go to the relevant website (ie. FIFA or UEFA). If you look on the FIFA website, you will find the rules.Sure theres no need now you've explained it all, nice one, thanks
