Interesting. Boro marched up the table after changing managers, they've have to be a favourite for promotion this season?
Bar the three teams just relegated they'd be favorites to go up. If Gilbert is earning Brentford that much compensation then surely Knight would get triple that amount for Derby. 166 appearances for Derby and 20 international caps with the potential to reach 30 in the next 12 months.

Gibert (22) may well be going out on loan before the month is out -- only 5 first team appearances from the bench, for a total of 49 minutes.
Alex Gilbert could leave Middlesbrough on loan in January transfer window - Teesside Live (gazettelive.co.uk) (https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/alex-gilbert-leave-middlesbrough-loan-28395170)

Gilbert was Brentford Bs best player, which again gives us an idea of the standard of Premier League under 21 teams and B sides, this lad regularly fails to make the Middlesbrough bench. Hopefully might get a run in League 1.

On top of that, he looks incredibly slight. Saw him in a Boro jersey and was scrawny. That's not always an impediment but definitely hard for a lad breaking in in his situation with hardly any senior football under his belt.

Speculation by Football League World today that Gilbert will be loaned out by 'Boro in January. Last season he made 12 appearances in the Championship (1 goal, 3 assists) but averaged just 18 mins on each. Finn Azaz seen to be one significant reason for Gilbert's situation.

Likely to be loaned out next month, ironically to make room for Louie Barry

I thought Gilbert was getting good reviews earlier in season playing as a 10 but seemed to drop away then , did he get injured?

Season so far (stats from Transfermarkt):
Squad 11, Not in squad 1,
Injured 10
Total minutes to date, 2024/5
= 34.
He needs to get out of there.

He had a good run towards the end of last season. Nothing much happening for him this season.

Scored an injury time winner for Middlesbrough today to put them into the playoffs places. Came on for Azaz with a few minutes left. The Sky commentator never mentioned his name when he scored, presumably didn't know who he was!

Lots of comings and goings at 'Boro during this transfer window. With Morgan Whittaker's arrival up front, and having played just 70 mins of Championship football this season before that, Gilbert will probably be loaned out, with Swansea showing interest. (Teeside Live, 27 Jan).

Charlton manager Nathan Jones has persuaded Gilbert to drop down to EFL 1 on a loan deal (Teesside Live, today). Disappointing, for a 24 year-old?

Probably more the reality of his situation than anything, two clubs, top division and the one underneath, and several managers at those clubs in that time have all picked someone else ahead of him most weeks. Hopefully he finally plays regularly and does well.

He's not 24, has only just turned 23 to be fair. But he's never had a consistent run of games in senior football, so if League 1 is where he needs to go to get that then that's better than going to another Championship club and once again not playing regularly.

It's all about playing at the highest level that you can get games ~ ~ What-ever level that may be !

Did a search, but couldn't find a thread for Gilbert, which is probably not a great sign for a player about to turn 24 - he's been primarily warming the bench at Middlesbrough since he arrived two and a half years ago - hadn't got any time this season. But he got a start tonight against Hull and helped himself to a goal and an assist... we'll see if that is a sign of things to come over the next few weeks.

There is a thread for him, the last post was in February this year (maybe this thread could be merged into it). He's a talented player, it's just a shame he doesn't play more games. Has had a couple of standout moments at Middlesbrough now, but has never really had an extended run in the team there.

That's a Matt Holland-esque finish
