Thought id get this up before we all get distracted by Europe.
Derry come to Tallaght on Sunday needing to win really to put the squeeze on Rovers , i suppose a draw isnt the worst result for them and 7 points behind with 10 games to go is hardly insurmountable.
A win for Rovers though probably puts them out of the race. They arent helped by the fact that Bradser can pick a second 11 to play St Josephs on Thursday and keep a strong bench just in case.
Waterford can push Pats into the relegation scrap with a win and with Sligos form Pats could be only 3 points ahead of the playoff place by Sunday evening.....
Bohs should beat Drogs and move to within 4 points of Rovers on Friday night..they are on form and look like realistic chalengers
Double week game in the First division and Cobh have two winable looking home games and might hope to cut the gap on Dundalk, Dundalk havent been convincing but seem to have enough to keep everyone else at arms length

Two wins for Harps this weekend if we're to cling on to any hope of a shot at a playoff really.

Disagree that we are realistic challengers, we simply don’t take enough chances, plus we have a centre back problem, Lacey has played only half one game, Cornwall lacks pace , Byrne is young and prone to an odd understandable error, and Kavanagh has no business being anywhere near that first team, he’s limited in the extreme.
The goals may start flowing, it’s a good standard attack, but I’d be concerned at how often Kacper has to bail them out with two or three brilliant stops almost every game.
Top three is the realistic target.

Bohs havent taken a point from Drogheda yet this season. Bit of a bogey team for us in recent times. They are defensively solid and we have a mistake or 2 in our defence. Recipe for disaster.

If you are 4 points off the top on Friday night you are serious chalengers , that being said its a shocker that we have lost 3 times to you this season , shouldnt have lost in the Aviva and should have won in the match where we led 2 nil only to start showboating, give us 4 points and take 5 off you and the table looks very different...but then again if my Aunt thad balls etc etc.
Big ask for Harps to win two matches this weekend having only won 5 all season, team will benefit from this year and be better next year (lot of young kids) you arent a mile off if you could add a bit of experience

Agree re:Bohs CB's. It is probabbly worth noting that Kavanagh is younger than Cian Byrne, its only a few months but if Cian Byrne can outgrow his mistakes I think we have to say that Kavanagh can as well. I dont think Byrne or Kavanagh has shown enough to say they are the future though and would like to see an experienced CB in beside Cornwall for next season as I do think that in spite of Cornwalls flaws hes had a good season when hes played. I also think we need a few fullbacks/wing backs as we frequently have Flores,Morahan or even on occasion Dayle Rooney acting as a full back or wing back. The fact that we have conceeded as few goals as we have is no doubt down to graft from the whole team & Kacper playing really well as of late.

Cian Byrne was very good for Galway Utd, sitting in front of the CB's. Him leaving us is one major reason for our form falling off a cliff.

It could be that that's his best position. For him to play there for Bohs however he needs to get past Morahan, Devoy, Bucko and McDonnell. We've a crowded midfield, it why James McManus was sent on loan to Sligo, McManus better than Bucko and McDonnell in my books but still couldn't get game time. I believe a couple of the lads mentioned are out of contract at the end of the season and they haven't been announced as re-signed for next year so there may be some possibility of playing there next season but it would still likely be a bit part role.

Yeah tbh the playoffs are long gone despite some fans eternal optimism! A strong finish and get to the cup quarters and we won't complain too much. We have a much better team now than we did start of season. My fear is that a couple of the new signings won't be here next season and that a couple of the young lads will be poached overseas or by Prem teams and we're in the same boat as this season, starting the season with a threadbare squad and still dreaming about restarting work on the stadium!

Significant games for Galway and Sligo. Derry win is a formality. I dont think you can ever call a game at United Park really though Drogs have been slipping a bit but shall go with a home win.
Dundalk get the bit between the teeth for a Cobh or Bray so need to bring that kind of performance in to games elsewhere in the league. We'll drop points in both games to late goals!

With the staggered games this weekend, I would be interested to know the viewership numbers on LOI.TV.
Does having games spread out have an effect or not is my question. Are there other timeslots that might be more successful too?
I have a sneaky feeling that the EPL is becoming more like background filler rather than a point of passion, so I would be for LOI challenging it.
Also, feel the rise of support of the NFL is mostly down to being on a Sunday evening, where no other sport is on. Not saying you can host a live event at that time, rather it just shows what a successful timeslot can do for a sport.

A few 3-0s against Athlone and Longford, and 4-1 over Treaty in the MSC (admittedly a second-string visiting line-up then), so any four-goal margin would be a record.

Never a red, it’s even debatable whether it was a foul or not, but if he’s giving it as a foul then it also looked like it was just inside the box for a penalty. A proper LOI referee’s decision that one :)

Same as every other game against Drogheda this season. Drogheda get one chance and score and we don't take any opportunities. Shbs were questionable as well. Bucko and McDonnell are both too defensive and Bucko is possibly the last person you want on the pitch when you have a lot of possession. But I knew this would happen before the match so should I be disappointed?

And it promptly does finish 4-0, which could even have been five or six! Puts us back in touch with Harps and Longford, and surely out of reach of tonight's visitors.

One of the worst games I 've ever seen tonight at the bowl, (to be clear not AT the Bowl, just one of the worst I have seen) saying it weeks now, the standard of the FD is just brutal, and I am not removing Dundalk from this.
Tonight was just a gritty display, not even sure we deserved a win, as for the pens, no idea what the ref saw, don't think either pen was right call, then UCD miss theirs on 87 mins, rebound scored, and guy handles it.
3 points thank you very much but not a game that will live in my memory.

I agree about the subs - Clarke and Devoy were dead on their feet and should have been subbed off - the goal came directly from a mistake by Clarke caused by tiredness.
Credit to Drogheda - they were well organised and took their one chance. Bohs need a massive response against Shelbourne next week.

Crikey, that's harsh. Thought that was a decent evening's entertainment. First half was passable but the penalty in injury time set up the second half. Couple of great saves either end, plenty last ditch defending, the momentum clearly building with us culminating in that penalty which was saved (Dundalk fans cheer) but we score the rebound (UCD fans cheer) and then it's ruled out (Dundalk fans cheer) - never seen that
Annoyed we lost, but that was a decent game of ball

Agree with that, plenty of drama right until the final whistle. UCD pushing for an equaliser, Dundalk looking to catch them in the break. Last ditch tackles and blocks, late penalty saves, what's not to like. Sorry Oriel but that's a mad take on the game.

We've been without Hickey and Keohane for some time now and it's directly linked to us dropping like a stone. Hickey does so much flick ons, and hold up play to bring others in. And Keohane is more of the same, always getting hold of things, always a tough battler in midfield. And we've been outrun and out passed and outthought by everybody since they've been out. Tonight we're relying at times on Greg Bolger who is in his last year or two as a pro most likely. And everyone else of late also noticed this and has figured out that if you get ahead against Galway they're not going to do much. Hopefully that starts to change with Hickey getting 25 odd mins tonight, and Keohane getting a good long runout. We immediately looked more dangerous when Hickey came in though. We may yet avoid the relegation playoff, but a loss for Sligo would be welcome. We've brought them right back into the picture of safety, (admittedly they've more than done their part too) and now given Cork a glimmer of hope tonight. I think by getting them back to full fitnss and keep them injury free, we'll stop the bleeding. It's tight down there, but we're at the wrong end of those teams ahead of us by quite a few points now.I think JC gets another year if we finish 6th or 7th. It'll show 5th and 6th/7th in two seasons. A kind of ....stability? I've never liked his football style but player's like Hickey make it work.

Greg Bolger? He plays for Cork and was in the stands. Are you mixing him up with Aaron Bolger who is still only 25? That Bolger should have started last night but was bizarrely left on the bench until the 56th minute with Colm Horgan, a full back, playing in his role. It completely backfired and Caulfield is increasingly making strange decisions which suggests to me he doesn't know a way out of this rut.
By the way, we haven't a hope of finishing 6th or 7th. We'll be lucky to get the play off spot just because Cork are so far behind us. If we can't beat Cork, Waterford or Sligo then how do you expect us to beat the teams above them. We are in free fall.

I watched the game on the TV3 stream. Sound of the crowd was very low - a technical issue it seemed to me. The heavily-accented Nordie commentator was a joy: at various stages Conor Keeley was Conor Kelly, Luke Heeney was Luke Healy, and he mispronounced Thomas Oluwa's name as well (can't blame him too much for that one). Drogheda was also 'Drokeda'. Best observation of the night though was 'let's see what armour they have in their locker.' Highly entertaining!

Ah that's it. Silly mistake in my part. But i figured JC had drafted him in on a free, as one of his former Cork go-to guys, a la conor mccormack. I was listening rather than watching the match last night, so was trying to picture why Bolger had signed for us (aside from JC managing him back in the day). I really do think we'll be allright once the injury crisis eases off, as it looks like it's doing, and McGuinness gets more game time. He scored against Waterford already. The other lad Malcolm Shaw though? Dear me lol

I thought McDonnell looked lively when he came on - gave a lot of go forward momentum. I would have brought him on for Whelan earlier and played Clarke as the false 9. Agree on Bucko though. Can't understand why Parsons stayed on as long as he did - Rhys Brennan showed much more willingness to try something when he came on. Now Brennan did run into dead ends sometimes, but Parsons was anonymous.
86th minute? Cornwall should have taken one for the team, got sent off and conceded a free 40 metres from the goal.

Darragh Leahy against Athlone in the cup. And he did even less for his red card. Only 2 times I can think that an appeal succeeded. This wouldn't restore my faith in the system, there's still many times an appeal failed when it shou have been granted

Yeah I may be being a bit harsh on McDonnell. I just wouldn't think of him as an attacking change. I don't think he has a goal or assist this year and I can't remember him getting any last year. Not something you want when chasing a game
