Wexford FC v Kerry

Wexford paid the price for a horrendous start and also for key players missing as they lost out to a lively Kerry side in Ferrycarrig this evening. Wexford began with Paul, James, Josh, Robbie, Dean, Mikie, Darragh, Henry, Calum, Kaylem and Ryan. Kerry came out of the blocks quickly and scored from their first decent attack when the ball was moved across the pitch to Kerry’s left where Adams curled a nice shot past Paul Martin in the Wexford goal for 1-0 to the away side. Immediately after their first goal, Kerry won a couple of corners and, from the second of these, Kerry’s McQueen bundled the ball over the line from close in to give Kerry a two-goal start. It was almost a third goal for Kerry on eight minutes when a Kerry forward broke clear, but Paul Martin saved the goal-bound effort with his legs. At this stage, it was Kerry looking lively and Wexford looking ponderous. As the half progressed, Wexford got more and more into the game, but were unable to get a goal back despite a few close efforts. Two good chances fell to Wexford’s Calum Flynn but he was unable to finish with either and Wexford also looked dangerous from set-pieces but the goal never came. James Crawford lifted a shot over the Kerry bar from a tight angle near the end of the half and Wexford also shouted for a peno as Henry Cromack was bundled over in the Kerry area but nothing was given. 2-0 to Kerry at halftime.

Wexford needed an early goal to get back into the game as the second half began but they probably didn’t really test Hiemer enough in the Kerry goal until too late. Subs for Wexford as the half progressed included Mark Imiren, Filip Wasilewski and Darragh Dunne. Mark Imiren lifted a shot over the Kerry bar when attacking a Wexford cross which reached Kerry’s far post and Mikie Rowe had a volley a yard over the Kerry bar. On 78 minutes, Mikie Rowe got the goal Wexford needed when he connected with a rebound off Hiemer after a good volley from Wasilewski came off the Kerry keeper. Kerry’s cause was then helped by a second yellow for Wexford’s Darragh Levingston which reduced Wexford to ten players. Wexford pressed for an equaliser right at the end but couldn’t find one and game ended on a 2-1 scoreline to Kerry. Best for Wexford was (as usual) Kaylem Harnett, while Henry Cromack and Ryan Kelly also showed well. Crowd was believed to be 726.
