there is bound to be a few more... there is some lame attempts here though.

The league needs a new name (like england going from Division 1 to the English PL) to highlight that it is a better standard, better football and all the rest of the GENESIS recommendations. It will give a better chance for new sponsorship money, government money and advertisment so hopefully crowds will increase.

Unless there is a really catchy (and easy to say) Irish word, im going to go for

The FAI Eircom Super League.

Éiresraith / Gaelsraith :: Irish League

Éirecraobh / Gaelcraobh :: Irish Championship

Intíresraith :: Domestic League
(I like this if you pronounced it "inter-sray-th" :))

Intírecraobh :: Domestic Championship

Idírsraith :: Inter League

Príomh-aire :: Premier in Irish

Note these a crude translations done using the online dictionary at http://www.crannog.ie/focloir.htm

iCraobh :: iChampionship
(I crave)

;)

I think something like this would be excellent, far better than anything out of the report. I'm no great user of the launguage, but like people said, it'd be something unique to us rather then calling it the FAI premiership :rolleyes:

No its got to be a marketing tool, not a word people won't be able to pronounce (and I'm a strong advocate of the Irish language)

How about we play to the leagues strengths? The Hoof League! :p

'The eL' has a good ring to it imo. Maybe the Eircom 10? Or does that sound too much like the Rossport 5? ;)

The Peil Eire League (sounds alomost spanish when you say it quickly)

Peil Eire A (premier division)

Peil Eire B (first division)

But what happens when Allianz take over the sponsorship? It would really sound like a Dublin and District League then!

(Yes I realise that the spelling doesn't exactly match but PAIL does sound like PALE)

I think so too. The suggestions in the Genesis report were complete and utter tripe. The eircom Professional Super League?!?! The two things a league like that aren't are professional and super.

The (Sponsor's name) Premier League - Plain and simple
The (Sponsor's name) League
The (Sponsor's name) Irish League
The (Sponsor's name) League of Ireland
The (Sponsor's name) Irish League Championship

Adding silly things like E-12 Super-duper GO league et al are just plain dumb. I agree with a model based on successful leagues. Barclays English Premiership, La Liga, Serie A, is there a copyright on us being called the Eircom Irish League cos of the Northern League? Surely we should have ownership of that title?

The EL is not to bad but when the sponsor changes it leaves you open to problems. Its not the name thats the problem, its the fact its not marketed. The el budget is a joke!!

Don't be rediculous. The south were the ones that split. The 'Irish League' title is over 120 years old. We should only be using the term 'Irish League' if/when we get an all-Ireland league.

I agree that there isn't much wrong with the present name 'eL', its really just that it isn't marketed correctly.

the eL is fine but as mentioned before, we need to have a name that will still have the ability to be marketed if the sponsor changes

Don't you mean the St. Patrick's Athletic incorporating St. Francis' Football Club and Friends League. We know what happens to your friends.

St. Francis are now un-in-corporated.

I am aware that we split but is it a registered trademark. I assume it is. Its the first name we are called thou. Anyone from abroad or even in the South call us the Irish League!!!! Its a constant correction I seem to have to make to people. Its awkward seeing as after the default league name (la liga, serie a) people say the Spanish League, the Italian league. However in Ireland we are not the Irish League ;)

I hear you. How did they end up as the Irish League anyway? Especially when the majority of the clubs are, ahem, the other side?! Barstoolers call our league the Irish League

Bit like the hypocrisy of their "national" side wearing green yet having dozens of butchers aprons hanging :rolleyes:

Leave it as the EL. When another sponsor comes in just do as its done now. Any fancy names or premiership should be barred.

The One Last Chance to make it Work League

Its awkward seeing as after the default league name (la liga, serie a) people say the Spanish League, the Italian league. However in Ireland we are not the Irish League ;) Unfortunately, there are two juristictions in Ireland. The one to which you refer is the Republic of Ireland. The other one is also Ireland and is also Irish, and they had the name 'Irish Legaue' first (over 120 years ago, when it represented the whole island).

I hear you. How did they end up as the Irish League anyway? Especially when the majority of the clubs are, ahem, the other side?!By 'the other side' you mean they have a British identity. Yes this is true, but it does not mean that an Irish identity doesn't exist alongside it. It may not be the mono-ethnic Nationalist/Catholic/Southern type of Irish identity, but that's not the only kind of Irishness that exists.

=======

How about:

'League Éireann' or 'League Sacar Eireann'? I know its Béarilge, but the word 'sraith' is too difficult for non-Irish speakers to say/understand.

What has the Plonk got to do with Delaney and his cronies being only interested in Man Utd? :confused:

Ok patsh
History lesson

1989 Roy Keane signs for Cork City on a Friday
Plonk fecks off to Old Trafford for a ManUre Match and doesn't bother to submit the registration form till Monday

Roy Keane signs for Cobh Ramblers on a Saturday Ramblers submit their form by registered post before close of business at the Post Office on Saturday. Therefore they have him registered before City's form reaches Merrion Square.
Result Roy leave Ramblers for Nottingham Forest rather than City.

Alles klar?:D
