A new show on RTÉ's Two's The Den is looking for underage bands.

Jam is seeking three bands aged 15 or under to take part in a week-long workshop, followed by a live battle of the bands final. The show will be aired between Monday 31 October and 4 November on The Den.

Band-members must be aged 15 or under as of 5 November and applicants should send in a sample of their work, either on tape, CD, DVD or video tape and an application form, available at www.rte.ie/jam, by 7 October.

All the world needs -another 'Battle of the Bands'. ...and where will these philanthropic patrons of new up and coming Irish music at RTE (Whatever happened to No Disco anyway?  ) be when this show is over? They'll have fcuked off back to 'mainstream programming'.

Actually that's just given me a horrible premonition -they're going to get these kids to play cover versions of mainstream pap so we can judge how good they are ...at doing cover versions of mainstream pap. Just so otherwise disinterested folks waiting for Fair City to come on can go "oh isn't that adorable" half mocking some 13 year old kid who doesn't shave yet and has half a dozen pubes singing "Woman I'm gonna love ya all night long!!!".

I know they're asking for demoes but they'll slip this little "versatility test" in somewhere.

Best of luck to those who go in for it but generally I reckon competitions should be left to those in competition -like football teams. Bands aren't and shouldn't be led by the nose into some turgid cockfight so RTE can bluff that they're fulfilling their commitment to new music.
