I think Dan is probably as good of a full LOI journalist we are ever going to get (even if he has totally abandoned his Louth roots).

Him and Johnny make a good combo on the podcast.

Overall, "new media" has been great for LOI. The Vlogs bring in a new demographic too.

The biggest game changer for me as an LOI fan is getting goals and highlights on Twitter (its only use nowadays) straight away. Makes going to games far more enjoyable when you can watch replays and other events in the moment.

Oh Im not saying he is a failed journalist, far from it!!! He failed on this particular issue, in relation to allowing himself to be influenced. It was poorly judged for a journo of his level and ability! Cherry picking what to report to suit an agenda was unnecessary imo as there was plenty to reort on in general, almost like favours were being called in.

Never ceases to amaze me how rattled Dan McDonnell gets at the slightest bit of criticism.

Very on the defensive when questioned about bringing up Duff frequently amongst other things.

Had to laugh listening to this week’s episode having read this comment a few days ago. It was abundantly clear how rattled he was again by the fact that plenty called him out over false comments on Aidan Keena and Pats trying to replace him with James-Taylor which were rubbished by Keena himself and Kenny. He owned up to the inaccuracy but just constantly alluded to being called out at literally any given opportunity for the rest of the episode :D

Haha spotted this too but didn't want to bring it up!

Bohs fans kicked up a big song and dance for of of the cup finals when the marketing by the FAI had them down as 'Bohemians' rather than 'Bohemian'. Despite the fact everyone says it with an s and that includes their own social media. Mountain out a molehill stuff, but it's not exclusive to the 2 Rovers clubs

I don't remember anything like that at all. I'm going to assume we were referred to as Bohemians F.C., which would be wrong and probably would get a reaction from people. Bohemians or Bohemian F.C. would be correct.

Johnny Ward once again insisting on dying on the stupidest hill I've ever come across. Making a huge deal of Dan referring to anyone as 'they'. He's made this point multiple times across a couple years and it's just so silly.

To feel the need to have to correct your co-host every time they something along the lines of 'they said X' and insist that the correct themselves to saying 'he said x' is bizarre.

He has gone on a few monologues in the past regarding pronouns, gender and Paul Murphy TD's child.

Ward mustn't be aware it's not acceptable anymore to want to call a man he and a woman she. Guy should be cancelled immediately.
There is only one opinion allowed anymore and if you don't agree just stay quiet

I have considered not listening any more on a couple of occasions. It's really needless and spiteful taking shots at some of the most marginalized people in society for absolutely no reason. I enjoy the podcast generally but every time this happens it ruins it. I am getting the impression Dan is becoming aware it's a problem judging by his so-so reaction today, he must be aware it doesn't reflect well on him either to be party to it.

This post isn't consistent with itself. If Ward is correcting McDonnell then it's Ward that's not "allowing" McDonnell using a term he disagrees with.

Haven't listened to the podcast yet though, so maybe I'm getting who corrected who wrong or missing some context.

I do find it strange though how often the self appointed gatekeepers of freedom of thought/speech behave in the exact manner they profess to be fighting against.

If I'm remembering correctly Dan was talking about the fella from Cork who just signed from Shels, and said something to the effect that, "They have been, looking for a move" It was referencing to someone as a they anyway and it set Johnny off in to a little whine about grammar for the 20th time. In isolation it's really not a big deal and could be overlooked as a nothingburger, it's that he has done it repeatedly and often said more that builds a pattern of behavior and not so great comments.

It'd just be nice if he could let it go, and is something that could definitely become a bigger issue if it continued.

But the thing is grammatically it's fine to use they as a pronoun for a single person. Usually it's when the gender is unknown but can also be when the gender is irrelevant or , as is probably the reason Dan uses it frequently and out of habit, when you are trying to protect the identity of someone who has given you information. In this case the gender wasn't relevant, were talking about a men's football team we all know that the person is a male and likely just out of habit Dan said "they". I'm not going to speculate on why it riles Johnny up so much but he should really just drop it. It's pointless nonsense that you'd expect from your drunk uncle at a party when he's had 1 too many. I'd wager we've had more commentary on pronouns than on the goings on at Cork this season which just goes to show how ludicrous it is.

Not sure where the best for this is, but Second Captains did an hour-long feature on UCD's historic 1976 tour of China this week. Up there as one of the most amazing LoI stories going. I believe some of the players were invited back to China last year for the country's 75th anniversary bash - the tour is still remembered in high places in China, as it was the first western football team ever to tour China.

Can listen here (https://www.secondcaptains.com/2025/08/01/episode-3314-ta-an-cathaoirleach-marbh/).
