I liked Whelans cos it played new and up and coming tunes once upon a time. Then they got Baldy DJ in and he discovered that one playlist would do, for the last two years!! I think he has introduced two tunes into the set in the last two years, them being Pressure Point and I Predict a Riot. Crowds are getting bigger and probably mean he thinks less about changing but he is a disgrace to the dj trade, living off the same songs for two years. He may as well stick a cd in for the entire night. He doesn't even change the ORDER!!
Now I am in a pickle. There are no decent clubs. Thomas Reads plays anything I ask for but as I club I dont really wanna stay all night. Fibbers is fine but sometimes is just a little too metal. In every other european city they have decent indie/alt rock nights. In Dublin we get one and they dont change???
I was in Galway three months ago and I was in Cuba. They had an indie night. I was not hopeful but it was class!! New QOTSA, Arcade Fire, Rage, unusual Pixies selection, played songs that are not all singles from albums but good album songs. Brand new songs, old classics, some odd seelctions for a dance floor too but he mixed it up and it was superb!!....I wish the dj would talk to the Whelans lad...

I know its a bit of a dive but if nicely tanked up going in you cant go wrong. If its dance music your after theres redbox. In my hometown of Limerick the choice is pretty limited but if your prepared to travel theres always dingle or even belfast.Plenty of choice in the latter.

The only place i've found in Dublin that I like in those terms is the aforementioned Thomas Read's Gareth (after nearly two years).
Before I moved here I was expecting Whelan's to be the bee's knees, but it's been a major let-down (even as a gig venue IMO), thought it would be Cork's The Lobby+The Oval+The Brog in one, far from it.
Thomas Read's is a spot I enjoy though. I find most places prefer a diet of R'n'b now though, and that's country wide, not just Dublin. :(
Don't suppose you want a hobby to fill your Saturday night's, the market is definitely there ;)

Tiktok,
Yeah Thomas Reads was brilliant when Fraiser was the DJ. Many years of any song I wanted. Now they have settled into a new dj and he too is dead sound. I even buy him a pint now and then. He's that decent!!!
Whelans has been my only salvation since I was 18 so I can't knock it, but lately I feel the need for to trottle the dj. I would love to have a go at dj'ing there for a night. I have the music. I think the sign of a quality place is a place that plays a song only one person knows, but everyone enjoys cos its a solid song. Places are too afraid to play a tune outside the scope.
Tiktok, ever go to Fibbers on a "normal" night? :) We tend to go to pubs with a good jukebox. Fibbers, International, The Nep.....

Been there twice. Both good. I can imagine thou how it could be hit and miss. Just a little out of the way unfotunately thou!!
What about Isaac Butts? Or has that gone in the 2 years since I moved to the sticks?
Thomas Reeds was a favourite.
The Nep is a great spot, although I never got there as much as I wanted to...
Whelans is okay, but prefer the pub to the club (alright for gigs though).

I must of ran into a couple of ye if ye go to these places. Isaac Butts has gone. I use to go alot. Bit of a fellow fest thou. But the music was great. It closed over a year ago and I dont think it re-opened?
The Nep is great for a pint and a tune or a match.
Reads seems to be the winner alright. Amazing its so empty at times!! And now the smoke is gone its great!!

Its on Abbey Street - upstairs is the Flowing Tide (lil scary). The Nep(tune) is downstairs. Can somebody go to the Isaac Butt Bar site and tell me if its re-opened?
