Last Inside Cork this week.

Next Thursday sees the last issue of the Inside Cork newspaper.

This paper goes back 15 years to Mike Silver and the Cork Advertiser who pioneered free distribution newspaper through retail outlets.

Liam Ryan of SuperValu Togher wanted a weekly newsletter which started in the offices of the Cork Advertiser. Soon it became too much of an epic production effort so it slip off under the ownership of Liam Ryan and was published as the Togher News.

This became astonishingly successful and a second publication, the Northside News was created which took off with unprecedented success, it immediately spawned the Southside News but the Northside News and marked a major city wide expansion of the paper, no longer confined to interests in the Togher area.

Nonetheless the Northside News continued to out sell its sibling and attracted the attention of the giant 96FM news group who bought it over and published the Northside/Southside News.

About five years ago the 96Fm were eaten up by the aggressive UTV monolith and absorbed the newspaper with it. It was initially an exciting time as the paper was reorganized and launched as the unprecedented “Inside Cork” and became a Cork landmark rivaling the Echo in popularity at times.

September the 15th sees the paper launch as the Cork Independent under it new Galway owners with an initial launch target of some 50,000 copies, but this is another story that’s only just beginning.

Be sure to get a little piece of history next week!
